The Custom Lite 20 gauge slug cuts felt recoil significantly while keeping your accuracy sharp. It pairs a 250-grain FTX projectile with specially tuned propellants to dial back the punch without sacrificing performance. You'll get about 25% less recoil than standard loads, making these especially nice if you're dealing with a sensitive shoulder or just prefer a softer shooting setup.
Hornady engineered this load specifically for rifled barrels, and the sabot design is where the magic happens. When you fire it, the plastic sabot engages the rifling to spin the slug for stability, then separates at the muzzle so the projectile flies downrange with minimal air resistance. The FTX bullet features a polymer tip that improves the ballistic coefficient, which means flatter flight and better energy retention at distance. Expansion happens reliably at all velocities because of the Flex Tip design, giving you consistent terminal performance.
Out of the box, you're looking at roughly 1600 fps muzzle velocity and 1421 foot-pounds of energy. That's enough to handle medium to large game out to 150 yards with good shot placement. The reduced recoil doesn't come from using a lighter projectile that loses energy fast. Instead, the modified propellant load keeps velocity respectable while taming the recoil impulse. Premium brass casings and quality primers ensure consistent performance from one round to the next, so you can trust the load to perform the same way every time you pull the trigger.
These work in pump-action and semi-auto shotguns chambered for 2.75" shells, but they're designed specifically for rifled barrels. If you've got a slug barrel with rifling, you want sabot ammunition. The FTX is made in the USA and comes five rounds per box.
No, these are designed for rifled barrels only. Sabot slugs engage the rifling to stabilize through the barrel, which is what makes them accurate. Using them in a smoothbore defeats their whole purpose and wastes the advantages of the sabot design.
You're looking at 25% to 40% less felt recoil compared to standard slug loads. Hornady achieves this by using slightly lighter bullets and specially tuned propellants that still deliver solid velocity and downrange performance without the extra kick.
Yes. While it has less recoil, it maintains effective performance out to 150 yards, which covers the vast majority of hunting situations. The FTX bullet expands reliably at all velocities, and the reduced recoil doesn't come at the expense of terminal performance.
Custom Lite slugs work in pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns chambered for 2.75" 20 gauge shells. Always check your shotgun's manual to confirm it accepts 2.75" ammunition and has a rifled barrel before loading.
