The Hornady American Whitetail is the kind of slug that doesn't overcomplicate things. It's a straightforward Foster-style design that works reliably in smooth-bore shotguns, using a proven formula that's been putting deer in the freezer for generations. The 1-ounce lead-alloy projectile loads to 1,600 feet per second and generates 2,484 foot-pounds of muzzle energy, delivering the stopping power you need for effective hunting.
The hollow-point construction initiates expansion on impact, while the tough lead-alloy core ensures deep penetration and energy transfer. Unlike softer lead, this material holds up to the pressure and velocity of the load without deforming prematurely. The compression-style wad does two critical jobs: it protects the slug from the shock of ignition and seals the bore, which means you get consistent velocity shot after shot.
These slugs are purpose-built for smooth-bore barrels, where the helical rifling on the slug's exterior allows it to conform properly to the bore. In a typical smooth-bore shotgun setup, this load produces groupings that work well for hunting distances up to 100 yards. The lead-alloy construction is tougher than pure lead alternatives, which means the slug retains its shape and integrity through the barrel and downrange.
Packed in convenient 5-round boxes, the American Whitetail line represents Hornady's commitment to delivering premium deer hunting performance without unnecessary frills. It's the kind of ammunition that prioritizes what actually matters: reliable expansion, clean energy transfer, and the consistency to put food on the table when it counts.
Yes, absolutely. These are specifically designed for smooth-bore barrels. The helical rifling on the slug allows it to conform to a smooth bore, and the compression wad seals the bore properly for safe, consistent performance. Just make sure your shotgun's manual confirms it's rated for slug ammunition.
The American Whitetail is optimized for hunting distances up to around 100 yards in typical smooth-bore setups, though some shooters report good accuracy beyond that with proper sighting equipment and practice. The 1-ounce lead-alloy slug maintains sufficient velocity and energy for clean kills at reasonable hunting distances.
Foster-style slugs like these are one-piece projectiles designed specifically for smooth-bore barrels and are more affordable than sabot rounds. Sabot slugs are designed for fully rifled barrels and provide better accuracy at extended range, but they're not compatible with smooth-bore guns. The American Whitetail delivers reliable performance in smooth-bore shotguns without requiring a specialized barrel.
Yes. The hollow-point construction is designed to initiate expansion on impact with the lead-alloy core retaining sufficient mass for deep penetration. The specific engineering ensures controlled expansion that transfers energy effectively for ethical, clean kills on deer-sized game.
