Howa's mini action has earned a loyal following for a simple reason: it's a receiver sized properly for cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel instead of a short action with wasted travel. The bolt throw runs about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action, so cycling is quick and the whole rifle stays trim and light in the hands. The Fence Line Mini takes that proven platform and dresses it for the field with a Scorched Earth camo synthetic stock and a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish on the barreled action, giving you real weather protection instead of bare blued steel riding around in a truck all season.
The 22 inch cold hammer forged barrel comes threaded from the factory with a Cerakoted muzzle brake already installed, so you can run the brake, spin on a suppressor, or shoot it clean. Feeding comes from a 5 round detachable box magazine, and the receiver is drilled and tapped for your scope base of choice. The HACT two-stage trigger is one of the best factory triggers in this class, breaking clean without the gritty creep you find on a lot of budget bolt guns, and the three-position safety lets you cycle the action on safe. Behind all of it sits Howa's sub-MOA guarantee, built on the same Japanese-made M1500 barreled action that's been earning its keep since 1979.
The Grendel is a sweet spot cartridge: soft recoil in the same neighborhood as a .243, with enough bullet to cleanly take whitetail and hogs inside 300 yards while doubling as a serious coyote rifle. In the mini action it gets a properly scaled home, which keeps the rifle compact enough to live behind the seat or ride a fence line all day without wearing you out. If you want one bolt gun that covers pest control, deer season, and relaxed range days without beating up your shoulder, this configuration is hard to argue with.
Yes, and it's more than marketing. The mini action receiver is scaled specifically for cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel, so the bolt throw is roughly 12 percent shorter than a standard short action. That translates to faster cycling, less wasted movement, and a lighter, trimmer rifle overall.
It's a versatile little cartridge that recoils about like a .243 but delivers a heavier 6.5mm bullet. Inside 300 yards it's a clean killer on whitetail and hogs, and it doubles nicely as a coyote and varmint rifle. Ammo is widely available from Hornady, Federal, and others, and it's pleasant enough that new or recoil-sensitive folks can shoot it all day.
The barrel comes threaded from the factory with a Cerakoted muzzle brake installed, so you can remove the brake and mount a suppressor or other muzzle device. The 22 inch barrel also wrings good velocity out of the Grendel, which keeps suppressed loads performing well.
Howa backs the M1500 platform with a sub-MOA guarantee, meaning 1 inch or better groups at 100 yards with quality ammo. The cold hammer forged barrel and the HACT two-stage trigger do a lot of the heavy lifting there, and owners routinely report these minis shooting tight groups with factory loads. Feed it ammunition it likes and it will hold its own against rifles costing considerably more.
