The Fence Line series is Howa taking the rifle that built their reputation, the 1500 barreled action, and dressing it up with the features hunters keep asking for. This .270 Winchester version wears a Prairie Reaper camo Hogue stock over a Cerakote flat dark earth barreled action, and the 22 inch cold hammer forged barrel comes threaded from the factory with a radial muzzle brake already installed. Want to swap it for a suppressor down the road? Spin the brake off and you are in business, no gunsmith visit required.
Howa has been building the 1500 in Japan since 1979, and the fundamentals here are the same ones that made it a favorite among hunters and rifle builders alike. You get a forged receiver, dual locking lugs with a 90 degree bolt throw, and an M16-style extractor that pulls brass reliably in cold, dust, or rain. The HACT two-stage trigger breaks clean out of the box, and the three-position safety lets you cycle the bolt to unload with the safety still engaged, which is exactly what you want when you are crossing a fence or loading up at the truck. Howa backs the whole package with a sub-MOA guarantee, and these rifles have a long track record of shooting better than their price class suggests.
The .270 Winchester has been dropping deer, antelope, and elk for nearly a century, and it pairs naturally with this rifle's long action and 22 inch barrel. Flat trajectory, manageable recoil, and ammo on the shelf of just about every store that sells cartridges. The hinged floorplate holds five rounds and makes unloading quick and quiet, while the Hogue stock's soft overmolded texture keeps a sure grip in wet weather. If you are after one do-it-all Western and whitetail rifle that is ready for a scope and a season, this one checks the boxes without draining the fun fund.
Yes, the Fence Line series ships with a radial muzzle brake installed from the factory on the threaded 22 inch barrel. It takes a noticeable bite out of felt recoil, and you can remove it to run a suppressor or a thread protector if you prefer a cleaner profile.
Howa guarantees three-shot sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with quality ammunition, and the 1500 platform has a long reputation for delivering on that promise. The cold hammer forged barrel and crisp HACT two-stage trigger do a lot of the heavy lifting. As with any rifle, spend a little time finding the factory load your barrel likes best.
No, this long action .270 model feeds from an internal magazine with a hinged floorplate and holds five rounds. That means nothing to lose in the field and quick, quiet unloading at the end of the day. Only the mini action Fence Line models use detachable magazines.
The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope bases, so mounting glass is straightforward. Howa 1500 mounts and rings are widely available from major optics hardware brands, and many Remington 700 pattern bases in the correct footprint will work as well. It ships without sights, so plan on adding an optic before heading out.
