The Fence Line series is what happens when Howa takes the 1500 action they have been building since 1979 and dresses it up for the field. This one wears the Prairie Reaper camo treatment, with a Cerakote finished barreled action and a matching coated polymer stock that shrugs off weather, truck beds, and long walks along the back forty. Underneath the finish is the same short action that has earned the 1500 its reputation: dual locking lugs, a smooth 90 degree bolt throw, and a spring loaded M16 style extractor that pulls brass reliably every time you run the bolt.
The .243 Winchester is one of the most useful cartridges you can put in a bolt gun, flat shooting enough for prairie dogs and coyotes but with plenty of punch for whitetail and antelope. The 22 inch hammer forged barrel gives the cartridge room to stretch its legs, and the threaded muzzle comes with a radial brake already installed, which takes the already mild recoil down to nearly nothing. That makes this a great pick for newer hunters, smaller framed folks, or anyone who wants to watch impacts through the scope. Rounds feed from a five round internal magazine with a hinged floorplate, so there is no detachable mag to lose in the tall grass.
Howa backs every Fence Line rifle with a sub-MOA guarantee, meaning it will print 1 inch or better groups at 100 yards with quality ammo. Credit goes to the cold hammer forged barrel and the HACT two stage trigger, which breaks clean and crisp right out of the box. The receiver is drilled and tapped so mounting a scope base is quick work, and the three position safety lets you cycle the bolt to unload with the safety still engaged, a feature worth having when you are crossing fences or climbing into a stand. No optic or base is included, but the receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory so it is ready for a Picatinny rail or scope bases. Mounts made for the Howa 1500 short action fit this rifle, and there are plenty of quality options available. Once a base is on, you can run just about any hunting scope you like.
Yes. The Fence Line comes with a threaded muzzle and the radial brake simply spins off, so you can swap on a suppressor or a thread protector whenever you want. That flexibility is one of the nicer touches Howa built into this series.
The .243 Win is a true dual-purpose cartridge. With lighter bullets it is a flat-shooting varmint and predator round, and with 90 to 100 grain loads it handles deer and antelope cleanly at practical hunting distances. Paired with the 22 inch barrel and included brake, recoil is very soft, which makes it a favorite for young or recoil-sensitive hunters.
No, the short action Fence Line models feed from a five round internal magazine with a hinged floorplate. You load from the top and can drop the floorplate to empty it quickly. Only the mini action versions in the Fence Line lineup use detachable magazines.
