Description

Fifty caliber rifles tend to fall into two camps: heavy bruisers built for show, and true precision platforms built to reach way out there. The HM Defense HM50B2 Gen2 lands firmly in the second camp. Chambered in .50 BMG CIP, it runs a 29.25 inch match grade barrel that's button rifled with an 8 groove, 1:15 twist and threaded 1-14 TPI at the muzzle, so adding a brake or other muzzle device is straightforward. The heart of the rifle is HM Defense's patented HMB bolt machined from 9310 steel, paired with a left side bolt handle and right side ejection port. That layout lets a right handed marksman run the bolt without breaking their firing grip, which matters when you're spotting your own impacts at distance.

What Changed in the HM50B2 Gen2

Compared to the original HM50B, the Gen2 got a real overhaul. The upper receiver, lower receiver, and 14 inch free floated rail were all lightened and cleaned up, machined from billet aircraft grade aluminum with a 7075-T6 upper. The bolt handle mounting system was beefed up too, making the rifle easier to service. The biggest upgrade is the stock. Instead of an off the shelf unit, HM machined their own aluminum precision stock with adjustable length of pull, comb height, and butt pad, all joined to the lower with a steel through bolted mount. The flat bottom rides a rear bag nicely, and a removable Picatinny section lets you hang a monopod back there if that's more your style.

Running the HM50B2 at the Range

The HM Target trigger breaks clean, the ERGO Tactical Super Ambi grip keeps your hand comfortable through long strings, and the full length top rail gives you plenty of real estate for serious glass. This OD Green Cerakote version feeds from a 10 round detachable box magazine and ships in a hard case with laser cut foam, one magazine, and the HM50 bipod with sled feet. At 56.75 inches overall with real heft to soak up recoil, it's a purpose built rig for stretching past the 1,000 yard mark and then some.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the HM50B2 Gen2 and the original HM50B?

The Gen2 gets a lightened, restyled upper receiver, lower receiver, and rail, plus a more robust bolt handle mounting system that makes servicing easier. The biggest change is the stock: instead of a buffer tube with an off the shelf precision stock, the Gen2 uses HM's own CNC machined aluminum stock with adjustable length of pull, comb, and butt pad, attached with a steel through bolted mount.

Does the HM50B2 come with a scope or bipod?

The bipod is included. The rifle ships with the HM50 bipod with sled feet, one 10 round magazine, a removable monopod rail section, and a hard case with laser cut foam. A scope, scope mount, and monopod are not included, so budget for quality glass rated to handle .50 BMG recoil.

Can I put a muzzle brake or suppressor on the HM50B2 Gen2?

Yes. The 29.25 inch match grade barrel is threaded 1 inch-14 TPI at the muzzle, which is a common thread pitch for .50 caliber brakes and suppressors. On a rifle this size, a good brake makes a noticeable difference in felt recoil and helps you stay on target to spot your own hits.

Why is the bolt handle on the left side of the rifle?

It's a deliberate design choice for precision work. With the bolt handle on the left and ejection out the right, a right handed marksman can cycle the action with their support hand while keeping their firing hand on the grip and their eye behind the scope. It speeds up follow up shots and keeps you settled on target.
