Description

Big fifties tend to fall into two camps: rough anti-materiel bruisers and true precision rifles. The HM Defense HM50B2 Gen2 lands firmly in the second camp. This is the refined follow-up to the original HM50B, and HM Defense went through the whole platform to lighten and strengthen it. The upper receiver, lower receiver, and 14 inch free-floated rail are all CNC machined from aircraft grade billet aluminum, and the patented HMB bolt is cut from 9310 steel. The bolt sits on the left side with ejection out the right port, which lets you run the action without breaking your grip or coming off the glass. That layout takes about two rounds to fall in love with.

A Barrel Built for Distance

The 29.25 inch match grade barrel is button rifled with a 1:15 twist and finished with a recessed 11 degree target crown, exactly what you want for wringing accuracy out of the .50 BMG cartridge at extreme range. The muzzle is threaded 1 inch by 14 TPI, and the HM Recore brake takes real sting out of the recoil. For a rifle in this class, it is surprisingly pleasant to shoot strings through.

The Gen2 Stock Makes the Difference

The biggest upgrade over the first generation is the stock. Instead of a buffer tube and an off-the-shelf unit, HM Defense machined their own aluminum precision stock with a steel through-bolted mounting system that ties directly into the lower receiver for consistent accuracy. Comb height, length of pull, and butt pad are all adjustable, the flat bottom rides bags nicely, and a removable 1913 rail section underneath handles monopod mounting. Up front, the ERGO Tactical Super Ambi grip and the crisp HM Target trigger round out the controls.

What You Get with the HM50B2 Gen2

This Tungsten Cerakote model comes in a hard case with laser cut foam, along with a 10-round magazine and the removable monopod mount. Add glass and a mount, feed it quality match ammo, and this rifle will reach distances most people only read about.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changed from the original HM50B to the HM50B2 Gen2?

The biggest change is the stock. The first generation used a buffer tube with a Magpul PRS, while the Gen2 gets an HM machined aluminum stock with a steel through-bolted mount, adjustable comb, length of pull, and butt pad. The receivers and rail were also redesigned to be lighter and stronger, and the bolt handle mounting system was beefed up.

Is the HM50B2 Gen2 bolt action or semi auto?

This is a bolt action rifle. The bolt handle sits on the left side with ejection out the right port, so a right-handed shooter can cycle the action with the support hand while staying on the grip and behind the optic. It feeds from a detachable 10-round magazine.

How bad is the recoil on this .50 BMG?

It is far more manageable than you might expect. Between the nearly 30 pound weight, the muzzle brake, and the adjustable aluminum stock, the recoil impulse is more of a firm push than a punch. HM Defense designed it so you can comfortably shoot longer strings, which is not something every fifty can claim.

Does the HM50B2 Gen2 come with a scope or bipod?

No optic, scope mount, or monopod is included, so budget for quality glass that can handle .50 BMG recoil. This model ships with a 10-round magazine, a removable monopod mount, and a hard case with laser cut foam. The flat top receiver and 14 inch free-floated rail give you plenty of real estate for mounting.
