HEVI-Shot's Hevi-Steel brings speed to the steel load game. These 12 gauge 3-inch shells push 1-1/4 ounces of #4 shot downrange at 1500 fps, which means more kinetic energy where it counts. That extra velocity compared to standard steel loads translates to measurable performance benefits in the field, especially at the distances where most waterfowl hunting happens.
Hevi-Steel uses precision-engineered steel pellets with a density of 7.8 g/cc, the same baseline density that's made steel the go-to choice for waterfowlers for decades. What sets these apart is the combination of that speed and a custom wad designed to keep pellets together longer, giving you denser patterns and more pellets on target. The shells also use clean-burning powders and all-weather primers, so you can count on consistent ignition whether you're hunting early in the morning or dealing with cold weather.
The #4 shot size is a sweet spot for most duck hunting situations. It's versatile enough for early-season teal or birds over decoys, while still carrying enough penetration for late-season mallards. If you're hunting geese or need to reach out further, Hevi-Steel comes in #3, #2, and larger sizes. Biodegradable flax seed is used as filler instead of plastic, which doesn't affect performance but aligns with modern hunting practices.
These shells come in standard 25-round boxes, making them convenient for a day at the ponds or a weekend hunt. Whether you're building a go-to load or testing what works in your gun, Hevi-Steel delivers the reliability and punch you expect from a quality waterfowl load.
Hevi-Steel runs at 1500 fps muzzle velocity, which is faster than most competing steel loads at 1450 fps. This speed boost delivers measurable energy gains downrange—about 9% more energy at 30 yards and 8% more at 40 yards. The faster velocity combined with a custom wad design produces tighter patterns and more consistent pellet strikes on target.
#4 is primarily designed for ducks, especially in early season or over decoys. For geese or longer-range shooting, most hunters prefer #2, #1, BB, or BBB shot sizes. The heavier pellets carry more energy and penetration at distance. Hevi-Steel makes all these sizes if you want to match the load to your specific hunting scenario.
Instead of plastic filler like some competitors use, Hevi-Steel uses biodegradable flax seed to fill the space between pellets inside the shell. This doesn't affect how the shells perform or pattern—it's simply a more environmentally considerate choice. The shot column and ballistics are identical to plastic fillers.
Yes. Hevi-Steel uses all-weather primers specifically engineered for dependable ignition in the wet and cold conditions waterfowl hunters encounter. The primers are designed to light consistently whether you're hunting in early fall or late season when temperatures drop.
