It uses extractors, which lift the spent shells about a quarter inch out of the chambers when you break the action open. From there you pull them out by hand, or with smooth-hulled shells a quick backward flick of the gun will usually send them clear. It is a simple, reliable system with fewer parts to fuss over.
This version has fixed cylinder bore barrels, meaning there is no choke constriction and no interchangeable tubes. That setup throws wider patterns that are ideal for close-range work like cowboy action shooting, pest control, and short-distance clays. If you want screw-in chokes, Heritage offers a 28 inch Field version of the Badlander with a choke tube set.
It is a great fit. The .410 bore produces very mild recoil, and the gun weighs only about six pounds with a compact 34.85 inch overall length, so it mounts and swings easily. The double triggers and tang safety are simple to learn, and the break-open action makes it obvious at a glance whether the gun is loaded.
