Double barrel .410s are getting harder to find, and the ones out there usually cost a small fortune. That makes the Heritage Badlander Field a bit of a rare bird: a genuine side-by-side in .410 bore with 28 inch barrels, a 3 inch chamber, and a price of admission that regular folks can live with. Heritage took the same boxlock design from their original coach gun lineup and stretched the tubes out for the field, then added removable chokes so you can set the gun up for whatever you're chasing.
The handling here is pure tradition. Twin triggers let you pick your choke on the fly, the two-position safety sits right on the tang under your thumb, and a brass bead rides between the barrels on a solid sighting rib. Break the action open and the extractor lifts your shells up for an easy pluck. The stock is stained Turkish walnut with a checkered pistol grip and a rubber buttpad, and it looks the part of a proper double gun without pretending to be a museum piece. Where the old classics wore blued steel that begged for constant oiling, the Badlander's barrels and receiver carry a matte black chrome finish that shrugs off weather and field wear.
With four included choke tubes (Full, Improved Modified, Modified, and Improved Cylinder), this gun covers a lot of ground for a .410. Screw in the tighter tubes and the 3 inch chamber opens the door to turkey loads, including modern TSS shells that have made the little bore a legitimate gobbler getter. Open things up and you've got a light-recoiling companion for squirrels, rabbits, backyard clays, or teaching a newer shooter the ropes without the shoulder punishment. At roughly 6.75 pounds it carries comfortably on long walks, and the longer barrels smooth out your swing compared to the stubby coach guns.
There is something satisfying about dropping two shells into a side-by-side and snapping it shut, and the Badlander delivers that experience in the most fun bore size going.
Yes, the 28 inch Field model ships with four removable choke tubes: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That's a big step up from the original 18.5 inch Badlander coach guns, which had fixed cylinder bores. The threading also accepts aftermarket extended tubes if you want to tighten patterns further for turkey.
It sure can. Both barrels are chambered for 3 inch shells, so it runs everything from light 2.5 inch field loads up to full-length magnum and TSS turkey loads. That flexibility is a big part of what makes this such a versatile little double.
It uses a manual extractor, which lifts the spent hulls up out of the chambers about a quarter inch when you break the action open so you can pull them by hand. No shells flying off into the brush, which is handy if you reload or just like keeping your hulls. It's also the setup traditionally required for cowboy action shooting.
The Badlander is imported by Heritage Manufacturing, the same folks known for the Rough Rider revolvers, and it's built in Turkey by Büyük Huğlu. Turkish shops have a long track record producing solid break-action shotguns, and the walnut stocks coming out of that region are a nice bonus at this level.
