Some guns earn their keep on pure fun, and the Heritage 92 Ranch Hand is one of them. This is a mare's leg style lever action pistol built on the classic Model 92 pattern, chambered in .44 Magnum with a 12-inch barrel and a shortened hardwood stock that brings the whole package in at just 24 inches overall. Work the big loop lever a few times and you will understand why these things have such a devoted following. It feels like something straight out of an old western, because that is exactly the point.
Underneath the cowboy styling is a proper 92 action with dual locking bolts, the same John Browning design that has been running strong for well over a century. The receiver and 12-inch barrel are alloy steel wearing a black oxide finish, and the barrel carries a 1:30 right-hand twist with six grooves to stabilize those big .44 slugs. Rounds feed through a side loading gate into an under-barrel tube that holds six, and Heritage added a thumb safety up top for a bit of modern peace of mind. A steel ring on the rear of the receiver nods to the classic mare's leg look and gives you a handy carry point.
You get a drift-adjustable front sight paired with an adjustable buckhorn rear, so dialing it in for your preferred load is straightforward. At around five pounds, the Ranch Hand soaks up .44 Magnum recoil better than you would expect from a gun this size, and it is downright pleasant with .44 Special loads. The fixed hardwood stock and forend give it that warm, traditional feel that polymer just cannot match.
Whether you are into cowboy action shooting, building out a western collection, or just want the most entertaining thing at the range on a Saturday morning, the 92 Ranch Hand in .44 Mag delivers big personality in a compact, well-built package.
It loads just like a traditional Model 92 rifle, through the side loading gate on the receiver. Rounds feed into the under-barrel tube magazine, which holds six rounds of .44 Magnum. Working the big loop lever cycles rounds into the chamber and ejects spent brass.
It is more manageable than you might think. At roughly five pounds of steel and hardwood, the Ranch Hand has enough heft to soak up a good chunk of the recoil, and the lever action platform spreads the push differently than a revolver does. If you want an even softer session, .44 Special runs noticeably lighter and makes for relaxed plinking.
Yes. It wears a drift-adjustable front sight and an adjustable buckhorn rear, the same setup found on Heritage's full-size 92 rifles. That lets you fine-tune your zero for whatever load you settle on, whether that is full-power magnums or lighter target fare.
That steel ring is a classic mare's leg touch, made famous by old western TV and film. Practically speaking, it gives you a convenient attachment point for belt or saddle-style carry rigs. Mostly though, it completes the look that makes this gun so much fun to own.
