Description

There is something refreshing about a rifle that does one thing and does it well. The Henry H15 Single Shot in .308 Winchester is a break-action hunting rifle built around the idea that one well-placed shot beats a full magazine of hurried ones. Henry made its name on lever guns, and that same fit and finish shows up here: a matte blued steel receiver, a 22 inch round blued barrel with a 1:10 twist, and real American walnut furniture with a curved pistol grip wrist. A solid black rubber recoil pad takes the edge off the .308, which is worth having in a 6.94 pound rifle.

How the Henry H15 Runs in the Field

The action is about as simple as it gets. A locking lever sits on top of the frame behind the hammer, and it pivots either left or right to break the barrel open, so it works the same for lefties and righties. There is no external manual safety to fumble with. Instead, the H15 uses a rebounding hammer that cannot reach the firing pin unless the trigger is deliberately pulled, plus an interlock that keeps the barrel from opening or closing with the hammer cocked. Load it, close it, cock the hammer when you are ready, and take your shot. A non-ejecting extractor lifts the spent case for you to pluck out, so your brass stays with you instead of in the leaves.

Sights, Optics, and What the H15 .308 Is Good For

Out of the box you get a brass bead front sight paired with a fully adjustable folding leaf rear, the same setup Henry runs on its lever actions. Want glass? The receiver is drilled and tapped for a Weaver 82 mount, and the rear leaf folds down out of the way. Chambered for .308 Winchester and happy to run 7.62×51 NATO, this rifle covers everything from whitetail and hogs out to elk-sized game with the right load. Sling swivel studs come installed, and at 37.5 inches overall it slips through thick timber and in and out of a blind without a fight. Made in the USA, and built like Henry means it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mount a scope on the Henry H15 Single Shot?

Yes. The receiver comes drilled and tapped for a Weaver 82 style mount, so adding a base and rings is straightforward. The folding leaf rear sight lays down flat, so it stays out of the way once you have glass on top. The mount itself is not included, so plan on picking one up with your scope.

Does the Henry Single Shot .308 have a safety?

There is no external manual safety, and that is by design. The H15 uses a rebounding hammer that cannot contact the firing pin unless the trigger is intentionally pulled, along with an interlock that prevents the barrel from opening or closing while the hammer is cocked. It makes for a rifle that is safe to carry loaded in the field and dead simple to run.

Will the H15 shoot 7.62×51 NATO ammo?

It will. The rifle is chambered in .308 Winchester and handles 7.62x51mm NATO as well, which gives you a huge range of hunting and target loads to choose from. The 22 inch barrel with its 1:10 twist stabilizes most common bullet weights without any fuss.

Is the Henry H15 a good choice for a new or younger hunter?

It is one of the better options out there. The break-action design is easy to understand, there is only one round in the gun at a time, and the top lever works from either side for left or right handed use. At under 7 pounds with a 14 inch length of pull and a rubber recoil pad, it is manageable for most builds, though .308 does have some push, so lighter recoiling loads are a smart place to start.
