A garden gun is one of those old farm tools that never really went out of style, it just got hard to find. Remington, Marlin, and Winchester all built smoothbore rimfires back in the day for exactly this kind of work, and Henry brought the concept back with the H1 Garden Gun. This version steps things up to .22 WMR shotshells, giving you noticeably more shot on target than the .22 LR loads while keeping everything else that made the original such a handy little gun.
Run a shotshell through a rifled barrel and the spinning shot cup flings pellets into a wide donut pattern that's next to useless past a few feet. The H1 Garden Gun solves that with an 18.5 inch round blued steel barrel with zero rifling, so your shot stays in a tight, even pattern at the short ranges where this gun earns its keep. Snakes near the porch, mice raiding the feed room, pigeons roosting in the rafters, that's the work this thing was built for, and the low report of a rimfire shotshell means you can handle business without rattling the whole neighborhood.
Underneath the black ash furniture, this is essentially Henry's beloved H1 lever action, which means the same slick blued steel hammer, lever, and trigger and the same buttery action Henry is known for. The rustic ash stock with its straight grip gives it a look all its own in the H1 lineup. At 5.25 pounds and 36.5 inches overall with a full 14 inch length of pull, it carries easy and shoulders naturally, whether it lives behind the seat of the tractor or by the back door. The tubular magazine holds 12 rounds of .22 WMR shotshell, the fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and blade front sights handle aiming duties, and the 3/8 inch grooved receiver takes ring mounts if you want glass on top. A quarter cock hammer safety keeps operation simple and traditional.
This isn't a safe queen. It's the gun you grab on the way out to do chores, and once the pests figure out you own one, you may find yourself volunteering to clear out the neighbor's barn too.
This one is built for shotshells only, and Henry marks the barrel accordingly. Since there's no rifling to spin-stabilize a solid bullet, accuracy with standard ammo would be poor and unpredictable. Stick with .22 WMR shotshells, which is exactly what the smoothbore was designed around.
The .22 Magnum version trades a little capacity for more payload, holding 12 rounds in the tube versus 15 in the .22 LR model. The WMR shotshell carries more shot at higher velocity, which gives you a bit more authority on pests at those short garden-gun distances. Otherwise it's the same 18.5 inch smoothbore, black ash furniture, and slick Henry action.
Think of it like a very small shotgun. Patterns stay tight and useful out to roughly 10 to 15 yards, which is plenty for snakes, mice, rats, and birds around the barn or garden. The short effective range is a feature here, since it lets you take care of pests without tearing up buildings or worrying about what's beyond your target.
Yes. The receiver has a 3/8 inch groove that accepts standard rimfire ring mounts, so you can add a compact optic if you'd like. That said, most folks find the adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and blade front sights are all they need for a gun that gets used inside 15 yards.
