The Big Boy Mare's Leg is Henry's tribute to the cut-down lever gun Steve McQueen carried in the old TV Western "Wanted: Dead or Alive," and Henry built it the way they build everything else: brass, blued steel, and real American walnut, all put together in the USA. The 12.9 inch octagon barrel and gleaming brass receiver give it serious presence, and the large loop lever swings fast whether you're bare handed or wearing gloves.
This is the Side Gate version, which is a meaningful upgrade over earlier runs. You get a loading gate on the receiver so you can top off the 5-round tube on the fly, plus Henry kept the removable magazine tube, which makes unloading at the end of a range day quick and painless. Chambering is .357 Magnum, and it happily digests .38 Special too, so you can run soft, cheap plinking loads or full-power magnums out of the same gun. At roughly 5.8 pounds with a forward-balanced octagon barrel, recoil is remarkably mild even with stout .357 loads. It might be the softest-shooting .357 you ever put rounds through.
The fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight pairs with a brass bead up front, a classic setup that's quick to pick up and easy to dial in. Yes, it runs both. The chamber accepts .357 Magnum and the shorter .38 Special interchangeably, so you can plink cheaply with soft .38s and step up to full-power magnums whenever you like. Reliability across both cartridges and multiple bullet types has been reported as flawless in independent testing.
You have two options for loading, which is what makes the Side Gate version so handy. Feed rounds through the loading gate on the brass receiver to top off on the fly, or load through the tube. Henry also kept the removable magazine tube, so unloading at the end of a range session is quick and doesn't require cycling live rounds through the action.
