Description

There are plenty of fun guns out there, but few turn heads at the range like a Mare's Leg. Henry's H1 in .22 WMR is a cut-down take on their classic lever action, modeled after the shortened repeater Steve McQueen carried in the old TV Western Wanted: Dead or Alive. It rides like a pistol but runs like a rifle, and the oversized loop lever makes cycling it fast, natural, and frankly addictive. The saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver is a nice period-correct touch that rounds out the Western character.

What Makes the Henry Mare's Leg .22 Magnum Tick

Under the nostalgia is a well-built rimfire. The 12.875 inch round blued steel barrel carries a 1:16 twist that handles .22 WMR loads well, and the tubular magazine holds 8 rounds. Sights are a hooded blade up front paired with a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear, so you can dial in your zero for whatever ammo you settle on. The receiver has a 3/8 inch groove milled right in, which means adding a scope or red dot with standard rimfire ringmounts takes just a few minutes. The stock and forend are genuine American walnut with a straight grip profile, shaped to match the original television gun.

Where the H1 Mare's Leg Earns Its Keep

At 24.5 inches overall and about 4.45 pounds, this thing is genuinely handy. Most folks buy one for the pure fun factor, and it delivers plenty of that, but the .22 Magnum chambering gives it real teeth for small game, pest control, or running a trap line where a compact firearm makes sense. The magnum round hits noticeably harder than .22 LR while staying cheap enough to shoot all afternoon.

A Henry Through and Through

Henry builds these in the USA with the same smooth action their rifles are known for, and it shows the first time you run the lever. Whether it ends up as a range favorite, a trapper's companion, or the centerpiece of a Western collection, the H1 Mare's Leg is one of those guns that never gets old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mount a scope or red dot on the Henry H1 Mare's Leg?

Yes. The receiver comes with a 3/8 inch dovetail groove machined in from the factory, so standard rimfire ringmounts made for a 3/8 inch groove will clamp right on. A compact pistol scope or a small red dot pairs nicely with the short sight radius, though the adjustable semi-buckhorn rear and hooded blade front work great on their own out to typical rimfire distances.

How do you load the Mare's Leg .22 WMR?

It uses a classic Henry tubular magazine that holds 8 rounds of .22 WMR. You twist and pull the inner brass tube, drop rounds into the loading port on the magazine tube, then reinsert the tube. It is the same system Henry uses on their rimfire rifles, and it becomes second nature after a range trip or two.

Will the H1 Mare's Leg also shoot .22 LR ammo?

No, this version is chambered specifically for .22 WMR, and .22 LR is a different cartridge that will not chamber or feed safely in it. If you want the .22 S/L/LR version, Henry makes that as the standard H001ML. The magnum chambering here gives you a flatter trajectory and more punch on small game.

Is the Henry Mare's Leg just a novelty, or is it practical?

It is definitely a blast at the range, but it earns its keep beyond that. The .22 WMR chambering makes it a legitimate tool for small game, pest control, and trap line work, and at 24.5 inches and about 4.45 pounds it is easy to carry all day. Plenty of owners treat it as both a working rimfire and a conversation piece.
