Description

The Hawke Vantage 4-12×40 is one of those scopes that quietly earns its spot on a deer rifle or range gun without making a fuss about it. The 4-12x zoom range covers a lot of ground, letting you dial down for close shots in timber and crank up to 12x when you need to pick apart a target way out there. That 40mm objective pulls in plenty of light, so the view stays usable during those first and last minutes of legal light when game tends to move.

What Sets the Vantage 4-12×40 Apart

Hawke built this one around their System H2 optics with 11-layer fully multi-coated lenses, and the difference shows up as a bright, sharp image edge to edge. The 30/30 Duplex reticle sits on the second focal plane and is a take on the classic L4 design. The thick outer posts draw your eye to center fast, while the fine center crosshairs keep small targets from getting buried. Center aiming hairs run 15 MOA from the middle on each axis, giving you 30 MOA total post to post at 100 yards on 4x, which doubles as a handy rangefinding reference once you know the spacing.

Turrets and Build on the Hawke Vantage

The capped, low-profile turrets click in 1/4 MOA increments and are resettable to zero, with up to 80 MOA of travel in both windage and elevation. Keeping them capped means no accidental bumps in the field or in the truck. The 1-inch mono-tube chassis is machined from anodized aluminum, and the whole scope is nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed so it shrugs off rain, fog, and recoil. A fast-focus eyebell and knurled posi-grip zoom ring let you make quick changes when a shot opportunity shows up.

Parallax is fixed at 100 yards, eye relief sits at a comfortable 3.5 inches, and at 14.6 ounces it won't weigh down your setup. Backing all of it is Hawke's No-Fault Lifetime Warranty, which is a nice safety net to have on glass that spends real time in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 30/30 Duplex reticle on the Hawke Vantage 4-12×40 actually mean?

The 30/30 Duplex is a take on the classic L4 reticle with thick outer posts that funnel your eye to the thin center crosshairs. The center aiming hairs measure 15 MOA from the middle on each axis, giving you 30 MOA, or roughly 30 inches, from post to post at 100 yards when set to 4x magnification. Once you know that spacing you can use it as a basic rangefinding and holdover reference in the field.

Is the Hawke Vantage 4-12×40 a first or second focal plane scope?

It's a second focal plane scope, so the reticle stays the same visual size as you zoom through the magnification range. Keep in mind the 30/30 subtensions are set at 4x, so that's the power to use when you want accurate reticle measurements.

Does this Hawke Vantage have adjustable parallax?

No, the parallax on this model is fixed at 100 yards. That setup is a great fit for most centerfire hunting and general range use, and it keeps things simple with one less dial to worry about. If you need adjustable parallax for a lot of close-range or long-range precision work, Hawke offers other Vantage configurations for that.

Will the Hawke Vantage 4-12×40 hold up to weather and recoil?

It's built to take a beating. The 1-inch mono-tube chassis is anodized aluminum, nitrogen purged, and O-ring sealed so it's shockproof, waterproof, and fogproof. Hawke also backs it with their No-Fault Lifetime Warranty, so it's made to stay in service season after season.
