Small part, big job. This is the steel retaining clip that holds the upper handguard onto the barrel of your Springfield Armory M14 or M1A. If you've ever pulled a fresh handguard out of the bag and wondered how it stays put, this little piece is the answer. It snaps into the groove on the barrel and grabs the rear of the handguard so everything stays seated and rattle-free.

Where the M14 Handguard Clip Fits In

This is the CO0701 factory clip, and it works across the M1A family including Standard, Loaded, Scout Squad and SOCOM builds. A lot of folks pick one up when they're swapping to a new composite or wood handguard, or when the old clip finally gave up. It's also the piece people forget to order until the handguard is already sitting on the bench, so if you're doing a refresh, grab one while you're at it. Rifles that shipped without a forend handguard, like some SOCOM variants, will need this clip to mount one at all.

Steel Build and Black Finish

Unlike the polymer bits you'll find on some replacement handguards, this clip is stamped steel with a black finish, so it holds tension the way the original does and shrugs off the heat coming off the barrel. Getting the Clip On

Installation is straightforward once you know the trick. The clip has two tabs, and one usually sits at a slightly more aggressive angle. Engage that side into the barrel groove first, then press or lightly tap the clip home while rotating toward the other tab until it snaps in. Some owners use a dedicated handguard clip tool for a cleaner job, but plenty get it done by hand. Take your time so you don't mar the barrel finish, and you'll have a solid, quiet handguard that stays where it belongs.
