Description

German Sport Guns has some serious .22 LR pedigree, and the Firefly is a good example of why. This pistol shares its DNA with the SIG Sauer Mosquito — GSG built that gun for SIG for years, and when SIG walked away from the platform, GSG kept it going under their own name. The result is a DA/SA hammer-fired pistol that handles and operates a lot like a full-size SIG, complete with a decocking lever, slide-mounted ambidextrous thumb safety, and controls that will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has spent time behind a P226-style handgun.

The OD green frame is zinc alloy overmolded with polymer, and the slide is zinc alloy as well — giving the gun a solid, substantial feel that doesn't come across as toylike. At 24.6 oz it has a real heft to it, which helps soak up the modest recoil of .22 LR and keeps the muzzle flat during rapid fire. The 4" steel barrel is non-threaded and fixed in place, which is a real accuracy advantage since a fixed barrel doesn't move during the firing cycle. The serrated slide gives you a secure grip during manipulation, and the adjustable rear sight lets you dial in your point of impact without any guesswork.

The integrated accessory rail up front gives you the option to mount a compact light or laser if you want to add some utility to your range sessions. The ergonomic black polymer grip fills the hand well and the controls are intuitive, making this a solid choice for newer shooters learning handgun fundamentals or anyone looking to reinforce trigger discipline and sight picture at a lower cost per round.

One thing worth knowing: like the Mosquito before it, the Firefly is a high-velocity gun. GSG recommends .22 LR HV loads at 1,200 fps or better — think CCI Mini-Mags, Aguila Super Extra HV, or similar quality factory ammo. The pistol ships with two recoil springs (one for high-velocity, one for standard velocity), so you do have some flexibility, but the gun runs best and most consistently when you're feeding it the good stuff. Stick with quality HV ammo, keep it clean and properly lubed, and the Firefly is a genuinely enjoyable pistol to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of ammo does the GSG Firefly run best with?

The Firefly is optimized for high-velocity .22 LR loads running at 1,200 fps or faster — CCI Mini-Mags, Aguila Super Extra HV, Remington Golden Bullets, and similar quality factory ammo are all solid choices. The pistol ships with two recoil springs: keep the heavier one installed for high-velocity loads, or swap to the lighter spring if you want to experiment with standard-velocity ammo. Quality matters here more than it does with some other .22 pistols, so skip the bargain bulk stuff until you know how your particular example runs.

Is the GSG Firefly related to the SIG Sauer Mosquito?

Yes, directly — GSG manufactured the SIG Sauer Mosquito under contract for SIG for years. When SIG discontinued the Mosquito, GSG retained the rights to the design and relaunched it under their own name as the Firefly. The controls, layout, and overall ergonomics are essentially the same, so anyone familiar with the Mosquito or SIG P226-style pistols will feel right at home with the Firefly.

Does the GSG Firefly have a safety?

It has two safety features. There is a slide-mounted ambidextrous thumb safety that works from either side, plus an internal locking device for additional security. As a DA/SA pistol with a decocking lever, the Firefly also allows you to safely lower the hammer after chambering a round and carry in double-action mode, which is an added layer of handling safety many people appreciate.

Can I mount a light or laser on the Firefly?

Yes. The Firefly's frame includes an integrated accessory rail forward of the trigger guard, sized to accept compact lights and lasers designed for pistol rails. It's a practical touch that adds some real versatility for those who want to set this up as a training gun or just want the option for a range laser. Just verify the fit of any accessory before purchasing, as rail dimensions can vary between brands.

Is the GSG Firefly a good pistol for newer shooters?

It's a reasonable choice for someone learning handgun fundamentals, particularly because .22 LR keeps costs down and the mild recoil makes it easier to focus on grip, sight alignment, and trigger control. The DA/SA action also offers a good introduction to the double-action-to-single-action transition that many centerfire duty pistols use. That said, newer shooters should be aware that ammo selection matters with this gun, so sticking with quality high-velocity loads from the start will make for a much better experience.

What is the trigger pull like on the GSG Firefly?

As a DA/SA pistol, the Firefly has two distinct trigger pulls depending on the mode. The double-action pull is on the heavier side at roughly 12 lbs, while single-action breaks closer to 8 lbs with a cleaner feel. Neither pull is going to win awards for lightness, but for a range plinker and trainer in this price range, it's consistent and workable — and learning to shoot through a heavier DA pull is honestly good practice for real-world handgun use.
