GrovTec's .223 crush washers are turned from steel and wear a black nitride finish that shrugs off rust and holds up to the heat and residue that build up right at the muzzle. A crush washer does what the name says. As you torque the muzzle device down, the washer deforms and flattens, creating friction against the barrel shoulder that locks your device at the right clock position and keeps it from spinning off after firing. That deforming action is also why you replace it every time you remove the device. Once a washer has been crushed, it won't give you a reliable lock again, so keeping a small stack in your parts bin saves you a trip when you're deep into a build.
These fit 1/2×28 threaded barrels, the standard for .223, 5.56, and plenty of 9mm and .22 setups too. Slide the washer on with the tapered side facing the receiver so it flattens correctly, hand-thread your muzzle device until it meets the washer, then torque it up in small increments until your device lines up where you want it. Most muzzle devices settle in around 15 to 20 ft-lbs, though you should always follow the maker's spec.

Crush washers are the simpler, more forgiving option and work great for flash hiders and most standard muzzle devices. Peel washers or shims give you more precise timing control and are often favored for suppressor mounts or brakes that demand exact alignment.
