The Monolith is what happens when Global Ordnance decides not to build just another AR pistol. Instead of a buffer tube hanging off the back, the recoil assembly lives entirely inside the upper receiver, which frees up the rear of the gun for a standard 1913 Picatinny rail end plate. That opens the door to whatever rail-mounted accessory setup you prefer, and it keeps the whole package short and easy to stash. At 4.38 pounds unloaded and 20.5 inches overall, this is one of the handiest 5.56 pistols you will pick up.
The headline feature is the barrel itself. Global Ordnance machines the bore, barrel extension, gas block, and Dead Air KeyMo muzzle brake from a single piece of 41V50 ordnance-grade steel. No pinned gas block to walk loose, no separate muzzle device to worry about timing, and no gas leaks at the block. It is a complex piece of machining that pays off in consistency and rigidity, and the barrel is thermally fit to the upper receiver to stiffen the whole assembly. The 12.5 inch tube runs a 1:7 twist, so it stabilizes heavier 5.56 loads without complaint.
Since the KeyMo brake is integral, anyone running a Dead Air KeyMo-mount can thread a can on in seconds. Global Ordnance also refined the gas system with a 45 degree gas port and reduced port size, so the gun runs cleaner and softer as a suppressor host than a typical short-barrel AR.
Controls are fully ambidextrous, including a clever patented bolt release you can drop by pressing the ejection port cover. A B5 Systems P-Grip 23 handles the grip duties, the handguard interlocks with the upper receiver for added stability, and a continuous top rail gives you plenty of room for optics and accessories. It feeds from standard AR-pattern magazines and ships with one 30-round steel mag, giving you 30+1 on tap right out of the box. For a compact 5.56 that does things differently and does them well, this one earns a hard look.
