Great Lakes Firearms & Ammunition built its reputation in Michigan making accurate rifles that don't require a second mortgage, and the SUB-1 is their bolt action take on that same idea. The name tells you what they were chasing: sub-MOA performance from a factory rifle. To get there, they hung a 20 inch fluted barrel machined from 416R stainless, the same grade of steel favored by match barrel makers for its consistency and corrosion resistance. The fluting trims weight and helps the barrel shed heat during longer strings, and the muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 with a brake installed from the factory. If you'd rather run a suppressor, spin the brake off and you're set with the most common thread pitch in this caliber.
The long strand carbon fiber stock is where this rifle separates itself from the pile of budget bolt guns with hollow plastic furniture. Carbon fiber gives you rigidity where it counts without the weight penalty of a laminate or heavy synthetic, which matters a lot when you're hauling a rifle up a ridge instead of just walking it from the truck to the bench. The Lichen Grey finish is a clean, muted color that looks sharp without screaming for attention in the field. At around seven pounds, this is a legitimate carry weight for a mountain hunt while still having enough heft to settle in behind for precision work.
The 6.5 Creedmoor is about as well matched to a rifle like this as a cartridge gets. Mild recoil, excellent factory ammo selection, and bullets that hold velocity way out past where most of us have any business shooting. The SUB-1 feeds from a detachable 5 round magazine, and the adjustable trigger lets you dial the pull to your preference instead of living with whatever left the factory. Add a quality scope and a box of match ammo, and you've got a deer and antelope rig that doubles as a steel-ringing range gun without much fuss.
Yes. The 20 inch barrel is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard thread pitch for most 30 caliber and 6.5mm suppressors on the market. Just remove the factory muzzle brake and thread your can on directly. Keep in mind your point of impact will likely shift a bit, so confirm zero after swapping muzzle devices.
It refers to the rifle's sub-MOA accuracy goal, meaning groups under one inch at 100 yards. The 416R stainless barrel is the same steel grade used in many match barrels, and paired with a rigid carbon fiber stock and an adjustable trigger, the platform is set up to deliver on that. As with any precision rifle, results will vary with ammo, so it's worth testing a few loads to find what your barrel likes.
It's a strong fit for deer, antelope, and similar game. The 6.5 Creedmoor hits well above its recoil level, and the carbon fiber stock keeps the rifle light enough for real backcountry carry. The fluted stainless barrel also handles weather and moisture better than a standard blued setup.
No, the rifle ships without an optic, so plan on adding a scope and mounts. Given what the 6.5 Creedmoor can do at distance, this rifle deserves quality glass to match the barrel. A scope in the 3-15x or 4-16x range is a popular pairing for a do-it-all hunting and range setup like this one.
