The FX-9 from Freedom Ordnance is one of those guns that just makes sense. It runs a common cartridge, takes magazines you probably already own, handles like something you already know how to run, and comes in a compact package that works for the range, home defense, or just a fun day of shooting without breaking the bank.
Built around a billet aluminum upper and lower that sit over an inch shorter than a standard AR-15 receiver, the FX-9 is noticeably lighter and more maneuverable than it looks in photos. The 8" barrel is made from 4150 chromoly steel with a black nitride finish, and that same full-hard nitride treatment extends to the bolt, ejector, feed ramp, extractor, and last-round hold-open for corrosion resistance and long-term durability. The type III hard-coat anodized aluminum receivers round out a build that's clearly designed to hold up over time.
One of the FX-9's biggest selling points is magazine compatibility. It feeds from standard double-stack Glock-pattern 9mm mags, which means factory Glock 17/19 magazines, ETS, Magpul GL9 PMAGs, and most other Glock-format aftermarket options drop right in. If you've already got Glocks in the safe, your magazine supply carries over. The included 31-round ETS magazine gets you started, and the extended paddle-style mag release makes reloads fast and intuitive.
The sling-equipped FX9P8-T model specifically adds a quality QD single-point bungee sling paired with a QD receiver end plate designed with quarter-turn rotational over-travel stops to prevent sling tangling against the buffer tube. The foam buffer tube cover is a practical touch for carry comfort. The sling's polyester webbing adjusts from 42" to 58" to fit different body types and kit setups. The 7.5" M-LOK free-float handguard gives you plenty of rail space for lights, grips, and other accessories, and the top rail is optic-ready so adding a red dot takes seconds.
AR-15 users will feel at home immediately. The FX-9 uses AR-configured controls throughout: manual thumb safety, oversized recurve charging handle, bolt hold-open on the last round, and a familiar pistol grip. It's a straight blowback platform, which means the action is simple, easy to maintain, and runs reliably with standard brass-cased 9mm loads. The FX-9 accepts standard double-stack Glock-pattern 9mm magazines. Factory Glock 17 and 19 magazines, ETS Group mags, Magpul GL9 PMAGs, and most Glock-compatible aftermarket options all work without any modification. This makes it especially convenient if you already own Glock handguns, since your magazine supply does double duty.
The sling model adds a QD single-point bungee sling, a QD receiver end plate with quarter-turn over-travel stops, and a padded foam buffer tube cover. The standard model ships without those accessories. Both use the same 8" barrel, M-LOK handguard, and core feature set.
Yes. The FX-9's 8" barrel is threaded at 1/2×28 TPI, which is the standard thread pitch for 9mm suppressors and muzzle devices. The included fluted muzzle enhancer is removable to expose the threads. Owners who have run it suppressed generally report good results, noting the blowback action cycles reliably with common 9mm loads.
For the most part, yes. The FX-9 uses AR-15-configured controls including the manual thumb safety, charging handle, bolt hold-open, and magazine release, so the manual of arms is very familiar to any AR shooter. The M-LOK handguard accepts most AR-15-compatible accessories, and the lower receiver is threaded to accept mil-spec buffer tubes. However, the billet receivers are over an inch shorter than a standard AR-15, so full-length AR-15 upper assemblies are not interchangeable.
Freedom Ordnance recommends 115-grain FMJ as the starting point, with 124-grain JHP also being well-suited for the platform. Brass-cased, jacketed ammo is the way to go. The manufacturer specifically advises against aluminum-cased ammunition and non-jacketed lead bullets, as both can cause feeding issues or void the warranty.
The FX-9 checks a lot of boxes for home defense. The 8" barrel keeps overall length manageable inside a home while still giving you more control and stability than a handgun. The 31-round magazine capacity is substantial, and the blowback 9mm action produces minimal recoil, making follow-up shots fast and easy.
