Description

There is a lot to like about a 9mm AR pistol that runs on Glock-pattern magazines, and the Freedom Ordnance FX-9P8S gets the formula right. Everything about the controls will feel familiar if you have spent any time behind an AR-15: same safety selector, same mag release, and a last round bolt hold open that works the way you expect. The difference is in the footprint. Freedom Ordnance machines these receivers from billet aluminum and cuts them more than an inch shorter than a standard AR set, so the whole package feels tighter and lighter in the hands. At around 5.4 pounds, it carries easy and swings fast.

What Makes the FX-9 Run

This is a straight blowback gun, which means no gas system to tune and fewer parts to worry about. The 8 inch barrel is 4150 chromoly steel with a nitride finish and a 1:10 twist, and the muzzle wears a faux suppressor from the factory that gives it a clean, finished profile. Threading is the standard 1/2×28, so swapping to a different muzzle device down the road is simple. The bolt, ejector, extractor, and feed ramp are all hard nitride treated steel, which pays off in wear resistance and easy cleanup after a long range day. Feeding comes from double stack Glock-style mags, and one 31 rounder ships in the box.

Setting Up Your FX-9P8S

The flat top upper and 7.5 inch free-float M-Lok handguard leave you a blank canvas. There are no sights installed, so plan on a red dot or a set of flip-ups, and the M-Lok slots handle lights, hand stops, or whatever else you like to run. The SB Tactical SBA3 brace is adjustable and comes installed from the factory, but the lower is threaded to accept standard buffer tubes if you ever reconfigure. Add in compatibility with most free-float AR rails and a huge share of the AR accessory market, and this American-made blaster ends up being one of the easier pistol caliber platforms to make your own. For range sessions, training, or just burning through cheap 9mm on a Saturday, the FX-9 is a whole lot of fun per trigger pull.

Frequently Asked Questions

What magazines does the Freedom Ordnance FX-9 use?

The FX-9 feeds from standard double-stack Glock-pattern 9mm magazines, and one 31-round mag ships with the gun. That means factory Glock mags, ETS, Magpul PMAG GL9, and similar aftermarket options all work. It is one of the biggest perks of this platform since these mags are cheap and easy to find.

Does the FX-9P8S come with sights?

No, this model ships optic ready with a flat top rail and no iron sights installed. Most owners drop a red dot on it and call it a day, though flip-up backup sights work great too. The full-length top rail gives you plenty of mounting real estate either way.

Can I remove the faux suppressor and run a real one?

Yes. The faux suppressor threads onto a standard 1/2×28 muzzle, so it comes off and any 9mm-rated muzzle device or suppressor with that thread pattern goes on. Since the FX-9 is a simple blowback design, it tends to run well suppressed with quality ammo.

Is the FX-9 compatible with standard AR-15 parts?

A good chunk of them, yes. It accepts AR-15 grips, buffer tube assemblies, and most free-float rail systems, and the lower is threaded for mil-spec buffer tubes. Keep in mind the billet receivers are over an inch shorter than a standard AR set, which is part of what makes it so compact, so complete upper and lower swaps are not in the cards.
