Freedom Ordnance machines the upper and lower from billet aluminum, and they trimmed the receiver set more than an inch shorter than a standard AR-15. That keeps the whole package lighter and handier without giving up compatibility, since the FX9 platform still accepts mil-spec buffer tubes, AR stocks, AR grips, and most free float rail assemblies. The 16 inch 4150 chrome moly barrel wears a hard nitride finish, as do the bolt, ejector, feed ramp, and extractor, so the parts that take a beating are built to shrug off wear and clean up easy. Up front, a free float M-LOK handguard gives you plenty of real estate for lights, hand stops, or a sling mount, and the muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 under the factory brake if you want to run a can or swap devices.
This platform is happiest on 115 grain FMJ, which is the cheapest 9mm on the shelf anyway, and it digests a wide range of jacketed hollow points too. Skip aluminum cased and bare lead ammo and it will hum along. Between the soft recoil, quiet report compared to a rifle caliber, and dirt cheap ammo, the FX9R in Flat Dark Earth makes a strong case as your steel plate gun, home carbine, or the one that gets new folks grinning on their first range trip.
Yes, it feeds from standard double stack Glock pattern 9mm magazines, both factory and aftermarket. Everything from 15 rounders up to 33 round sticks will lock in, and one 32-round magazine comes in the box. If you already run a Glock, your mag pouch is basically set.
You can. The 16 inch barrel is threaded 1/2×28 underneath the factory muzzle brake, which is the standard pitch for 9mm suppressors and muzzle devices. Spin the brake off and thread on your can, no gunsmith visit needed.
