Most 9mm ARs start life as a 5.56 receiver with a conversion block stuffed inside. Freedom Ordnance machined the FX-9 from billet aluminum around the 9mm cartridge from day one, which is why the receivers run about an inch shorter than a standard AR set and the whole gun feels tighter and better balanced in the hands. This 4-inch Elite in Flat Dark Earth is the shortest configuration in the lineup, and it makes a genuinely handy little blaster for the range, the truck, or the bedside.
The Elite trim is where Freedom Ordnance stepped up the furniture. You get a BCM B5 pistol grip and trigger guard, the Warhammer ambidextrous charging handle, a free float M-LOK handguard mounted on BCM barrel nut hardware, a finger stop up front for control, and the Elite flash hider capping the threaded muzzle. An SB Tactical SBA5 brace comes installed from the factory, and the lower is threaded for a mil-spec buffer tube if you ever want to change direction down the road.
The simple blowback action runs off double stack Glock pattern magazines, hands down the most common and affordable 9mm mags on the planet. A 32-round magazine comes in the box, and Freedom Ordnance recommends 115 grain FMJ loads for everyday shooting, with plenty of jacketed hollow points running well too. The barrel, bolt, and other high wear steel parts are nitride treated for corrosion resistance and long service life.
Everything here is built in the USA and backed by Freedom Ordnance's limited lifetime warranty. Controls sit right where AR muscle memory expects them, the flat top Picatinny rail is ready for whatever optic you like, and the M-LOK slots handle lights and accessories. For a compact pistol caliber setup that shares mags with your carry gun, this one earns its spot in the safe.
It runs standard double stack Glock pattern 9mm magazines, and one 32-round mag comes in the box. Factory Glock and Magpul Glock-style mags are known to run well in this platform. If you already own a Glock, your existing mags will feed it, which keeps spares cheap and easy to find.
Freedom Ordnance recommends 115 grain FMJ loads as the baseline, and the platform also handles many jacketed hollow points well. Stick with brass-cased, jacketed ammunition and skip bare lead and aluminum-cased loads, which the manufacturer advises against. Range testing has shown the FX-9 to be reliable across common FMJ brands.
The Elite trim upgrades the furniture and controls. You get a BCM B5 grip and trigger guard, the Warhammer ambidextrous charging handle, a redesigned free float M-LOK rail using BCM barrel nut hardware, a finger stop, and the Elite flash hider. It also ships with the SB Tactical SBA5 brace already installed.
The barrel is threaded 1/2×28, so 9mm-rated suppressors and muzzle devices will spin right on once you remove the flash hider. The lower receiver is threaded to accept mil-spec buffer tubes, so aftermarket braces and related hardware are an option too. The flat top rail and M-LOK slots handle optics, lights, and most AR-15 accessories.
