Their answer was a gas piston system developed with Osprey Defense, making this one of the few AR-style platforms that can cycle the round reliably. This upper kit gives you that whole setup ready to drop onto your own mil-spec AR-15 lower, no gunsmithing required.
The heart of the kit is a 20-inch button-rifled barrel with a 1:9 twist, tuned to stabilize those featherweight .17-caliber bullets. It wears a 1/2×28 threaded muzzle, the same common pitch you'll find on plenty of rimfire cans, so mounting a suppressor is straightforward. The updated R2 version uses Osprey Defense's slim piston system that self-adjusts between suppressed and unsuppressed shooting, so you don't have to fiddle with a gas setting when you thread on a can. Everything is built around Franklin Armory's proprietary .17 WSM bolt carrier group.
The proprietary free-float handguard is M-LOK compatible and includes an integrated barrier stop and indexing point, which comes in handy when you're braced on a fence post or shooting bag during a prairie dog session. The upper is optic-ready with a full-length top rail, so you can mount whatever glass suits your style of hunting. This kit ships in black.
This cartridge is the reason the whole platform exists. It drives a 20-grain bullet right around 3,000 fps, giving it a remarkably flat arc for a rimfire. Zero at 100 yards and you're only about 1.2 inches low at 150 and roughly 4 inches low at 200, with the bullet still moving faster than a .17 HMR does at the muzzle. For varmints and predators out to 200-plus yards, this piston upper turns your existing lower into a genuine long-range rimfire.
