The Fortis Night Rail brings together the two things people really want from a handguard: it stays light in your hands and it holds rock solid on the gun. At 12 inches, this M-LOK rail free floats the barrel of your 5.56 AR-15, which keeps anything you clamp to the rail from touching the barrel and throwing off your point of impact. It's machined from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum with a hard-coat anodized finish, so it shrugs off scuffs, sweat, and rough handling without complaint.
What sets this one apart is the mounting system. Fortis built a proprietary two-piece 4140 steel barrel nut that grabs the upper with a full 360 degrees of contact, and the story around here is that the barrel nut takes nearly as long to machine as the rail itself. The whole rail body runs around 8.9 ounces, so you get that stability without the weight penalty a lot of full-contact designs carry.
The top wears a continuous Picatinny rail for optics, backup irons, night vision, or whatever sighting setup you favor. Because it comes with its own barrel nut, you'll remove your factory nut during install and replace it with the Fortis unit. Double-check your gas system length and barrel profile against the 12-inch rail length and 1.35-inch interior diameter to make sure everything clears.
Fortis includes a barrel nut wrench in the box, so the specialty tool is handled for you. You'll still want an armorer's vise block, an AR upper action wrench, and a torque wrench to do the job right. Beyond that, installation is considered one of the easier parts of this rail thanks to the two-piece nut design.
Absolutely. The M-LOK slots along the sides and bottom accept M-LOK QD sling mounts, so you can add a quick-detach sling point wherever it feels natural on the rail. Fortis makes its own low-profile M-LOK QD sling mount if you want a matched look, but any standard M-LOK QD mount will work.
