Fortis built the Hammer around the parts that tend to fail on a standard mil-spec handle, then wrapped it in an Olive Drab Green anodized finish that pairs nicely with tan, green, and blacked-out builds alike. It's machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum, so it stays light at right around 1.5 ounces while shrugging off years of hard use.
The two big changes here are the roll pin and the latch backstop. Fortis went with a roll pin that's larger and tougher than mil-spec, and they redesigned the backstop so the shaft of the handle keeps the latch from overextending. That takes a huge amount of torque off the pin, which is exactly where cheaper handles like to crack when you pinch-charge or yank hard on a stuck bolt. The result is a handle that holds up to abuse instead of becoming the weak link.
The extended latch and that big vertical gripping surface give your thumb a natural place to land, so one-handed charging is genuinely easy. Aggressive serrations on the latch mean you get a solid bite whether you're bare-handed or running gloves.
