The FN Non-Reciprocating Charging Handle (NRCH) Conversion Kit takes the reciprocating charging handle off your SCAR 17S or 20S and replaces it with a non-reciprocating setup. That means the handle no longer slams back and forth right where your support hand or thumb likes to sit. You get a new bolt carrier, a charging handle sled, and two ambidextrous, reversible charging handles that lock forward when the bolt closes and stay put while you shoot. It is the same modernization FN rolled out to bring the legacy Heavy rifles in line with newer factory guns.
The biggest win here is ergonomics. With the handle staying static during fire, you can run any grip style, hold the forend however you want, and mount optics without the charging handle mucking things up. The two handles that ship in the kit are different lengths, and they can be set on the left, the right, or both sides, and articulated up or down to fit your reach. There is also a built-in forward assist function, so nudging the bolt fully into battery is easy when you need it.
This kit is built specifically for the SCAR Heavy platform, meaning the 17S and 20S. It will not work on the Light 16S. Worth knowing up front: the 20S was designed to accept the NRCH from the start, so the swap is quick, while a legacy 17S needs the front plate replaced, which requires pulling the barrel. Most folks with the right tools handle it at home, but plan on a torque wrench and some heat to break the thread locker on those barrel screws. If you are not comfortable pulling a barrel, a gunsmith can knock it out fast.
The SCAR earned its reputation with America's elite units, and this is a factory FN part, not an aftermarket knockoff. One thing to keep in mind is that some existing aftermarket charging handles and modified endplates may not carry over to the NRCH setup, since the interface is different. For anyone chasing a cleaner, more modern feel out of an older SCAR Heavy, this is the direct route.

On a 20S it is quick, since that rifle was designed to accept the NRCH from the factory and no new front plate is needed. On a legacy 17S you have to swap the front plate, which means pulling the barrel and dealing with thread locker, so you will want a torque wrench and a heat source. Plenty of owners do it at home, but a gunsmith can handle the barrel work if you would rather not.
It means the charging handle no longer travels back and forth with the bolt when you fire. That keeps it out of the way of your support hand and lets you keep a steady cheek weld and sight picture during fast strings. The handles lock forward on bolt-close and stay static, and they still give you a forward assist when you need it.
