There's a reason the original Browning Hi-Power served NATO militaries for over 80 years. The feel, the balance, the pointability – it was one of those pistols that just worked. FN's modern High Power picks up right where that legacy left off, but with the mechanical improvements that a 21st-century shooter actually expects. The result is a pistol that looks at home in a leather holster and shoots like a purpose-built competition gun.
FN didn't just slap a new finish on an old design. The internals got a serious rethink. The old circular locking lug setup was replaced with a more contemporary block-style lockup, the center link is gone, and a one-piece full-length guide rod now handles recoil management. Most notably, FN deleted the magazine disconnect safety – that's the feature on the original that notoriously degraded the trigger. The result is a single-action pull that runs right around 5 lbs, smooth and consistent, with none of that mushy resistance the classic HP was known for.
The 4.7" cold hammer-forged barrel features a recessed target crown and polished feed ramp, and the oversized ejection port means this thing feeds and ejects reliably across a wide range of factory loads. At 40 oz. empty, it's a substantial pistol – but that weight pays dividends in how flat it shoots and how quickly you get back on target.
The ambidextrous thumb safety and slide stop make this one of the more left-hand-friendly single-action pistols on the market, and the reversible magazine catch covers the rest. The extended beavertail and rounded, serrated hammer eliminate hammer bite without sacrificing a clean draw. Driftable steel blackout sights give you a usable sight picture without glare, and they sit in a standard dovetail, so there are aftermarket options if you want to swap them out.
The FDE model ships with two sets of polymer grip panels – one in matching FDE and one in OD green – and FN offers seven additional G10 and wood grip options if you want to take the look further. The PVD finish is durable and holds up well to regular range use and holster wear.
No, and that's one of the key improvements FN made over the original design. The magazine disconnect has been removed entirely, which cleans up the trigger pull noticeably. The pistol will fire with the magazine removed, so keep that in mind during handling and dry-fire practice.
The FDE model includes two sets of polymer grip panels – one in Flat Dark Earth and one in OD Green. If neither color or texture is your thing, FN offers seven additional aftermarket grip options in G10 and wood, including oak and walnut. The grip frame uses a standard panel pattern so third-party options will likely show up over time as well.
It's one of the better full-size single-action pistols for lefties. The thumb safety, slide stop, and magazine catch are all ambidextrous or reversible, which covers the main controls a left-handed shooter needs to run the gun efficiently.
Significantly better. The original Hi-Power's magazine disconnect safety was notorious for making the trigger feel gritty and heavy. FN eliminated that on the new High Power, and the result is a single-action pull right around 5 lbs that's smooth and clean. For a stock factory pistol, it's a very good trigger.
The polished feed ramp and cold hammer-forged barrel are designed to handle a wide range of modern factory loads. The oversized ejection port also contributes to reliable cycling across different bullet profiles. Standard FMJ range ammo and most hollow point defensive loads run without issue.
The standard FN High Power does not have an optics-ready slide cut, and there is no accessory rail under the dust cover. This model stays true to the classic High Power silhouette. If optics or a light are priorities, you may want to look at a different platform, but for iron-sight shooting this pistol punches well above its weight.
