Description
The FN Five-seveN has been around for over two decades, serving allied militaries and law enforcement worldwide, and the MRD is what happens when FN listens to feedback and updates a proven platform without messing with what made it great. Chambered in 5.7x28mm, this bottlenecked, high-velocity cartridge is genuinely unique in the handgun world. It shoots flatter, hits harder at distance, and produces significantly less felt recoil than just about anything in a comparable pistol size. The 4.8-inch cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel squeezes real performance out of the round, and the delayed blowback, single-action-only action keeps things smooth and consistent shot after shot.
The Five-seveN MRD's Optic System Is the Real Deal
The MRD name stands for Micro Red Dot, and FN didn't just mill a slot in the slide and call it a day. The pistol ships with a set of interface plates and mounting hardware that covers most of the popular optic footprints on the market, including the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Viper/Venom, Burris FastFire, Holosun 507 series, and more. You swap out the cover plate, select the right plate for your optic, and you're done in minutes without touching a gunsmith. The adjustable, photo-luminescent iron sights co-witness with many of those optics, so you're not giving anything up if you choose to run both.
Built for Control, Not Just Show
FN completely reworked the ergonomics on the MRD generation. The polymer frame features multi-surface stippling that gives you a genuinely secure grip even with wet hands, and the enhanced slide serrations front and rear make press checks and manipulation much easier than on earlier Five-seveN models. The ambidextrous safety and reversible magazine release make this equally usable for left- and right-handed shooters. The internal single-action hammer keeps the profile clean, and the trigger breaks at around 6.2 lbs with a tactile reset that's noticeably improved over older versions. The integrated Picatinny rail up front gives you room for a light or laser if needed.
At 25.2 ounces unloaded and 8.2 inches overall, this is a full-size pistol, but the light-recoiling 5.7x28mm round makes it feel remarkably easy to shoot for extended range sessions. This 10-round configuration ships with two magazines, making it a solid choice for areas with capacity restrictions or for those who simply prefer the platform at this capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What optics are compatible with the FN Five-seveN MRD?
The Five-seveN MRD ships with multiple interface plates and screw sets that cover most of the popular micro red dot footprints on the market. Compatible optics include the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Vortex Viper and Venom, Burris FastFire series, Holosun 507 and K-series, SIG Romeo, Swampfox Kingslayer, and Docter/Noblex, among others. All the mounting hardware you need comes in the box, so there's no need to source plates separately.
How does the 5.7x28mm cartridge compare to 9mm in this platform?
The 5.7x28mm is a small-caliber, high-velocity bottlenecked round that produces noticeably less felt recoil than 9mm despite traveling significantly faster, often approaching or exceeding 1,800 to 2,000 feet per second from a 4.8-inch barrel. That translates to faster follow-up shots and a flatter shooting experience. The tradeoff is that 5.7x28mm ammo is less widely available and generally costs more per round than 9mm.
Does the Five-seveN MRD's trigger come ready to go, or does it need break-in?
FN applied an updated coating to the trigger mechanism on the MRD generation that gives it a smoother feel right out of the box, similar to a well broken-in earlier model. The trigger pull ranges from 4.4 to 7.87 lbs and breaks at roughly 6.2 lbs with a tactile and audible reset. It's a serviceable single-action pull that most shooters will find workable without modification.
Does the Five-seveN MRD come with a threaded barrel?
No, this model does not include a threaded barrel from the factory. Aftermarket threaded barrels are available for the Five-seveN MRD from select manufacturers, including FN itself, but they are sold separately. Given the already soft recoil of the 5.7x28mm cartridge, a compensator or suppressor is more of a preference than a necessity.
Is the FN Five-seveN MRD fully ambidextrous?
Yes. The MRD features an ambidextrous manual safety and a reversible magazine release, making it equally functional for left- and right-handed users. The safety is a rotating lever positioned above the trigger in the European style, which is a bit unconventional compared to thumb safeties on most American pistols but becomes second nature quickly.
What is the difference between the 10-round and 20-round versions of the Five-seveN MRD?
The pistol itself is mechanically identical between the two configurations. The only difference is the magazine capacity included in the box. The 10-round version (this listing) ships with two 10-round magazines, while the 20-round version ships with two 20-round magazines. The pistol will accept either magazine interchangeably.
