This 14.7" barrel is chambered in .223 Rem / 5.56 NATO, spun with a 1:7 right-hand twist, and features a mid-length gas system that noticeably smooths out the recoil impulse compared to a carbine-length setup. The barrel is made from U.S.-sourced Chrome Moly Vanadium per Mil-B-11595E, then button rifled the way FN, Colt, and other military suppliers do it. The bore and chamber are chrome-lined, which fights corrosion and heat erosion so you can run higher round counts before throat wear starts eating into your groups. The matte black manganese phosphate exterior finish shrugs off sweat, weather, and general handling.
That 1:7 twist is the sweet spot for 5.56, stabilizing everything from light 55-grain plinking loads up through heavier 77-grain match projectiles. M4-style feed ramps and barrel extension keep rounds chambering cleanly, which matters when you're running the gun hard. The profile is a government contour ahead of the gas block with a heavier section from the block to the muzzle, giving you a good balance of weight and stiffness.
Every FN barrel is High Pressure Tested (HPT) and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI) at the factory to catch flaws or micro-stresses before it ever leaves the building. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, so it takes standard flash hiders, brakes, and suppressor adapters. The 14.7" length is popular because a standard A2 birdcage can be permanently attached to bring the setup up to a full rifle-length configuration while keeping the overall package short and handy.
The 14.7" length lets a standard A2 birdcage flash hider be pinned and welded on to reach full length, without needing an extended muzzle device the way a 14.5" often does. That gives you a shorter, handier rifle than a 16" while keeping a clean, permanent muzzle setup. It's become a favorite for URGI-style and clone builds for exactly that reason.
Yes. The mid-length gas system spreads out the pressure curve compared to a carbine-length setup, which translates to a softer, smoother recoil impulse and less wear on your bolt carrier group. Plenty of builders report their mid-length setups shoot noticeably smoother than carbine-gas barrels of similar length.
The 1:7 right-hand twist is the standard military rate and handles the widest range of 5.56 and .223 loads. It stabilizes light 55-grain ammo for practice and heavier 62-grain and 77-grain match or defensive loads for accuracy at distance. For most builds, this twist is the most versatile choice you can make.
