The FN 509 Midsize Tactical is one of those guns that genuinely earns the word "versatile" without any marketing hand-waving. It started life as FN's entry into the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun System trials, and the combat-testing DNA shows. FN put over a million rounds through the 509 platform during development, and the Midsize Tactical carries that same DNA in a frame trimmed down just enough to tuck under a cover garment while still delivering a full four-finger grip and 15+1 capacity at the ready.
The Midsize Tactical isn't just a standard 509 with a threaded barrel bolted on. The 4.5" cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel features a target crown and 1/2×28 threads for suppressor or muzzle device compatibility, and FN polishes every chamber and feed ramp by hand for reliability across a wide range of ammunition. The slide gets FN's patented Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, which accepts more than ten commercially available miniature red dots via included adapter plates without any milling required. Factory iron sights are suppressor-height Trijicon green tritium 3-dot night sights that co-witness with your optic whether or not you're running a can. The rear sight also sits protected by serrated wings that double as a one-handed slide-racking surface in a pinch.
The frame is where the "Midsize" designation really pays off. FN trimmed the grip 0.4" shorter than the standard 509, which meaningfully changes how the gun prints under a shirt, while the 4.5" slide length gives you a longer sight radius and more barrel than you'd get from a typical carry gun. Two interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit, and the grip texture is aggressive enough to stay put under stress without being uncomfortable on the draw. Controls are fully ambidextrous, with both the slide stop lever and magazine release running lefty-friendly out of the box. The Midsize Tactical uses the same 4.5" slide and barrel as the full-size 509 Tactical, but the grip frame is trimmed down 0.4" in height. That shorter grip is the key difference for carry, making it easier to conceal under a garment while still providing a full four-finger grip. The Midsize ships with a 15-round flush magazine and a 24-round extended magazine, compared to the 17- and 24-round pairing on the standard Tactical.
