FN has been turning out barrels for the U.S. military for a long time, and this 16-inch carbine-length barrel puts that same pedigree in the hands of home builders. It's cut from U.S.-sourced Chrome Moly Vanadium steel to the Mil-B-11595E standard, button rifled with a 1:7 twist, and chambered for both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO. That twist rate does a nice job stabilizing everything from lighter 55-grain plinking rounds up to heavier match bullets, so you're not locked into one type of ammo.
The chrome-lined bore and chamber are the real headline here. Chrome lining fights corrosion and shrugs off the heat erosion that eats away at bare steel over long strings of fire, which translates to a longer service life and more consistent chambering and extraction. Every barrel gets High Pressure Tested and Magnetic Particle Inspected at the factory, so each one leaves the line free of hidden flaws or micro-stresses. That kind of testing is why FN barrels have the reputation they do.
This is a carbine-length gas system with M4-style feed ramps and barrel extension already cut in, which keeps feeding smooth and reliable. The gas block journal measures the standard .750 diameter, so your off-the-shelf low-profile gas blocks drop right on. The muzzle comes threaded 1/2×28, giving you the freedom to run a flash hider, brake, comp, or suppressor without any extra machining. A matte black manganese phosphate finish coats the exterior to hold off rust and oxidation.
If you're assembling a dependable general-purpose carbine or refreshing a tired build, this is a barrel that earns its keep. It's a barrel-only component, so you'll supply your own gas system, muzzle device, and handguard, and a qualified gunsmith should handle the install to get headspacing and torque right.
This barrel has a 1:7 right-hand twist. That's the same rate used on military M4-pattern rifles, and it stabilizes a wide range of bullet weights well. You can run lighter 55-grain loads for practice and heavier match or defensive bullets in the 62 to 77-grain range without issue.
It's a barrel-only part, so it isn't a complete drop-in assembly. You'll add your own gas block, gas tube, muzzle device, and handguard, then headspace and torque it to the upper. FN recommends having a qualified gunsmith handle the install to get everything set correctly.
The gas block journal is the standard .750 diameter, so common low-profile gas blocks fit right on. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, which is the standard pitch for 5.56 barrels. That lets you mount flash hiders, muzzle brakes, compensators, or suppressors made for 5.56.
The chrome-lined bore and chamber resist corrosion and stand up to the heat erosion that wears out bare steel over time. That means a longer barrel life and more consistent, reliable feeding and extraction. It's one of the reasons FN barrels hold up so well under heavy use.
