The .410 bore got serious when tungsten super shot hit the market, and Fiocchi's Golden Turkey TSS proves why turkey hunters are rethinking smaller shotguns. Loaded with 13/16 ounce of premium 18 g/cc tungsten pellets, these shells deliver ballistic performance that traditional lead loads simply couldn't match from a sub-gauge gun.
The magic is in the material. Tungsten is 56% denser than lead, which means a tiny #9 TSS pellet weighs nearly as much as a traditional lead #4 or #5. You get the penetration energy of larger shot without sacrificing pattern density. That's something shooters couldn't pull off with lead, where you had to choose between dense patterns with lighter pellets or heavier knockdown with fewer pellets in the pattern. With this Fiocchi load, you get both.
At 1100 fps, these shells punch above their weight. The dense tungsten construction ensures superior downrange energy and extremely tight patterns, making ethical shots possible well beyond where old .410 loads became questionable. Most experienced .410 turkey hunters recommend keeping shots within 40 yards, a distance that many thought unrealistic for .410 bore just a few years ago. The Fiocchi product team engineered these with precision hulls and quality primers selected specifically for reliable, consistent performance.
The smaller #9 shot size might seem counterintuitive, but it's actually the advantage. Tungsten's density lets manufacturers load significantly more pellets into the shell compared to lead, creating patterns tight enough for clean head and neck shots on turkeys while maintaining the hitting power needed for an ethical kill.
TSS ammunition creates higher pressures than traditional lead loads, so not all .410 bore firearms are rated for it. Check your gun's owner manual or manufacturer specifications before shooting these shells. Standard .410 bore shotguns rated for 3-inch magnum loads should work fine, but it's important to verify first.
Most experienced .410 turkey hunters keep shots within 40 yards, even with premium TSS loads. While the ballistics might support longer shots, turkey hunting success depends on pattern consistency and target size. At 40 yards, you have the margin for error needed with a smaller gauge. Beyond that distance, you lose reliability with the .410 payload.
A #9 tungsten pellet weighs about as much as a #4 or #5 lead pellet because tungsten is 56% denser. This means you can fit far more pellets into the shell, creating extremely tight patterns while maintaining penetration energy. You get dense patterns typical of small shot with the hitting power of much larger lead shot.
Yes, Fiocchi Golden Turkey TSS shells have brass cases and boxer primers, making them reloadable. However, the tungsten shot pellets are harder than lead, so you'll need specific reloading components designed for TSS ammunition to avoid damaging your press or dies.
