Description

Fiocchi's Golden Pheasant line was developed and tested in South Dakota's prime pheasant country, and it shows. These 20 gauge shells pack a full 1 ounce of nickel-plated #7.5 shot at 1245 feet per second, giving you plenty of pellets for pattern density without the extra recoil of larger gauges. The #7.5 shot size is that sweet spot in upland hunting where you get enough density to put birds down cleanly at typical 30 to 40-yard ranges, but still maintain decent penetration through feathers and bone.

What Makes Golden Pheasant #7.5 Shot Different

The nickel plating is the key here. It keeps those lead pellets hard and round as they travel down the barrel and through your choke, which means tighter, more consistent patterns. More importantly, the smoother surface of nickel-plated shot seems to punch through a rooster's plumage more cleanly than standard lead, dragging fewer feathers into the wound channel. Whether that makes a measurable difference in the field comes down to your gun and your pattern testing, but plenty of hunters swear by it.

The 20 Gauge Advantage

If you grew up hunting 12 gauge or switched to a 20, you already know the appeal. Less recoil means better follow-up shots and a more pleasant day in the field, especially on a long hunt. These shells deliver the knockdown power you need without wearing you out. The innovative wad design protects shot during the loading process, keeping pellets uniform and ready to fly.

For Close-Range and Mid-Range Work

These rounds really shine when you're hunting over dogs or in terrain where most of your shots fall within 40 yards. That's where the #7.5 pellet count gives you the kind of pattern you want. If you're running wide-open fields and need to consistently connect at 50 yards or beyond, you might consider dropping down to #5 or #6 shot for a little more payload weight, but for typical upland hunting conditions, the Golden Pheasant 2.75-inch load is solid all-around ammunition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between #7.5 shot and #5 or #6 for pheasants?

#7.5 gives you more pellets per ounce, which means tighter patterns and better coverage at closer ranges (typically 20 to 40 yards). Larger shot sizes like #5 and #6 have fewer but heavier pellets, which carry more energy downrange and work better for longer shots beyond 40 yards. It comes down to where you typically hunt and how your gun patterns with each size.

Why does nickel-plated shot cost more?

The nickel plating process adds time and materials to manufacturing. The payoff is harder, rounder pellets that resist deformation as they travel through your barrel and choke, which can improve pattern consistency. Some hunters find the smoother surface also provides better penetration through feathers. Whether it's worth the extra cost depends on your gun and your expectations.

Is 1 ounce of #7.5 enough for a 20 gauge pheasant load?

For typical upland hunting with a good dog or over familiar terrain, 1 ounce is plenty. The key is knowing your effective range with your particular shotgun and choke. You should pattern these at the distances you actually hunt to know for sure. If you're consistently taking birds at 45+ yards, a heavier load or larger shot size might give you more confidence.

Can I use these for hunting other upland birds?

Absolutely. While these are designed for pheasants, the #7.5 shot works well on grouse, quail, and other upland game birds where pattern density matters more than raw penetration. They're versatile enough to take with you on mixed upland hunts where you might encounter different species throughout the day.
