These shells use a Catalyst lead-free primer paired with a clean-burning, temperature-stable propellant. These are standard 3-inch shotgun shells that work in any 12 gauge gun rated for 3-inch magnum loads. The FLITECONTROL FLEX wad actually performs consistently through both standard and ported waterfowl chokes, so you're not locked into a specific setup. Just make sure your shotgun is rated for steel shot and 3-inch shells.
The main difference is speed. High Velocity shells push 1635 fps compared to the standard 1450 fps—that extra 185 fps gives you a flatter trajectory and reduces the lead you need to account for on moving birds. The High Velocity version uses the same advanced wad and shot blend, so you're getting the same pattern density with more velocity.
Number 2 shot sits in the sweet spot for general waterfowl use. It gives you enough pellet count to maintain tight patterns at range while keeping sufficient energy for clean, ethical kills. It works well on both ducks and geese. If you're hunting larger birds or longer distances, you might bump up to #1 or BB; for tighter patterns on smaller puddle ducks, #3 or #4 are options.
Actually, the Catalyst lead-free primer and clean-burning propellant reduce residue buildup compared to some other premium waterfowl loads. That said, regular cleaning after any waterfowl hunt is a good habit. You'll find less gunk to deal with, though, which makes maintenance easier overall.
