With a 2.5 ounce payload of dual #7 and #9 shot, this load packs more pellets downrange than standard lead ever could at the same weight. The tungsten-alloy material sits at 18 gm/cc density, making it 22 percent denser than standard tungsten and 56 percent heavier than lead. What that means in the field is straightforward: more energy retained at distance, denser patterns that stay tight past 40 yards, and penetration that handles the toughest birds cleanly.
This round rides behind Federal's rear-braking FLITECONTROL FLEX wad, which separates from the rear as it leaves the barrel. That controlled release keeps your shot column intact longer than conventional wads, producing the tight, consistent patterns that TSS is known for. The wad works equally well in standard or ported turkey chokes. Full-length wads protect your barrel from the extra-hard tungsten pellets, preventing bore damage that harder shot can cause.
Loaded to 1000 fps, this shell delivers patterns that turn 50-yard opportunities into realistic shots. More pellets means more margin for error when birds don't cooperate or move at the last second. The blended #7 and #9 sizing gives you the density benefits of smaller pellets while maintaining the penetration that larger shot offers traditionally. It's a real advantage when you're hunting tighter cover or uncertain how close you'll get before that tom spots you.
The combination gives you the best of both worlds: the #9s create dense pattern fill while the #7s provide deeper penetration through tough feathers and bone. More pellets overall means denser coverage in the vital zone, and the smaller shot sizes only work because tungsten is 56 percent denser than lead, so each pellet carries substantial energy downrange.
Modern 12GA shotguns rated for 3.5-inch magnum loads will handle these shells without issue. Tungsten is harder than lead, so some older barrels made before the 1980s may not be safe for TSS. Check with your gun's manufacturer or a gunsmith if you're using a vintage shotgun to make sure it's rated for tungsten ammunition.
TSS maintains energy and pattern density much longer than lead. While 40 to 45 yards is the traditional sweet spot, this load delivers patterns tight enough that 50-yard shots become feasible if you've patterned your specific gun and choke combination. Always pattern your setup to know what your actual effective range is.
No special choke is required. The FLITECONTROL FLEX wad performs well in both standard and ported turkey chokes. That said, getting the tightest possible patterns means finding the choke and load combination that works best in your specific gun. Patterning before the season is essential with any turkey load, especially one this performance-focused.
