Federal Premium High Over All rounds are engineered from the ground up for trap, skeet, and sporting clays competition. Every component matters when you're trying to break clays consistently, and Federal packed this load with features that set it apart from standard target ammunition.
The standout feature is Federal's exclusive one-piece Podium wad. This isn't just any plastic cup—it's designed to provide uniform compression around your shot charge, protecting the pellets during the violent forces of ignition and creating the tightest, most predictable patterns possible. You'll notice the difference downrange where it counts.
The pellets themselves are made from high-antimony lead, which is harder and more resistant to deformation than standard lead shot. When pellets stay round and intact through the barrel, they group together tighter and deliver more consistent energy on target. Federal blends their lead with 5% antimony to hit the sweet spot between hardness and density.
These shells feature a solid brass shotshell head and a tapered one-piece hull that's designed specifically to make reloading easier and more reliable. If you're running high volume through the clays course, the reloadability of these shells will save you real money over time. The brass head extracts cleanly from tight competition shotgun chambers and holds up to repeated reloading cycles.
You're getting 7/8 ounce of #8 shot loaded to 1275 fps—a velocity that's fast enough for consistent patterns at distance without producing excessive felt recoil. The #8 shot size is the standard for 20 gauge competition because it delivers about 359 pellets per shell, giving you plenty of density to break targets without being overkill. Each box contains 25 rounds, perfect for a practice session or competition day.
The Federal HOA stands out because of its exclusive one-piece Podium wad and hard, high-antimony lead pellets. These components work together to create more consistent patterns and tighter grouping at the target. The tapered hull and solid brass head also make these shells reloadable, which saves money for high-volume shooters.
#8 shot is the standard for 20 gauge competition because it provides around 359 pellets per shell with good pattern density. It's versatile enough for trap, skeet, and sporting clays at typical shooting distances. Some competitors prefer #7.5 for longer targets, but #8 is the most popular choice and works well for most situations.
Yes, the tapered one-piece hull and solid brass head are specifically designed for reloaders. These shells will withstand multiple reloading cycles, which makes them an economical choice if you shoot high volume. Always follow proper reloading procedures and recipes when reloading shotshells.
1275 fps is right in the sweet spot for competition shotshells. It's fast enough to deliver consistent patterns at distance without producing the harsh recoil of higher-velocity loads. This moderate velocity helps reduce shooter fatigue during long competition days while maintaining the performance you need to break clays.
