Federal Top Gun target loads hit the sweet spot between cost and consistency, making them a go-to choice for anyone putting in serious time on the clay course. These 20 gauge shells pack 7/8 oz of #9 lead shot into a 2-3/4" case, delivering 1210 feet per second of muzzle velocity without excessive recoil that'll beat you up after a long shooting session.
You're getting a well-thought-out design here. The Triple Plus wad column works to maintain tight, even patterns downrange, while the eight-segment crimp keeps things secure in the chamber. Federal loaded these with clean-burning powder that ensures reliable ignition round after round, and the brass-trimmed steel head gives you dependable feeding in both semiauto and pump-action shotguns. The reloadable hull is a nice touch if you want to squeeze more value out of them down the road.
The #9 shot size is specifically engineered for clay breaking. You get more pellets in the pattern compared to larger shot sizes, which means better hit probability on fast-moving targets at normal ranges. This load has earned its reputation as a staple in trap houses and skeet ranges across the country. Real shooters rely on Top Gun because the performance is predictable shot to shot, which lets you focus on your technique instead of worrying about whether your ammo will cooperate.
These shells work in virtually any 2-3/4" shotgun and produce no surprises. The velocity is moderate enough that fast-cycling autoloaders won't be finicky, and the recoil stays manageable whether you're running a full day of sport shooting or breaking clays casually.
#9 shot provides more pellets per shell, which creates a denser pattern and gives you better odds of connecting with fast-moving clay targets. It's especially good for skeet and short-range trap shooting. Larger sizes like #8 or #7.5 carry better downrange and work better for longer trap distances, but #9 is the standard choice for most target sports.
Yes. Federal Top Gun shells use a reloadable hull with quality brass heads, so you can reload them multiple times if you have the equipment and experience. This extends the value of the ammunition for serious shooters who reload their own ammo.
These loads should cycle reliably in most semi-auto and pump-action shotguns rated for 2-3/4" shells. The 1210 fps velocity is moderate enough that it cycles smoothly in most modern designs. Always check your shotgun's manual to confirm it's rated for your specific shell length and velocity.
Federal Top Gun is built as a value-oriented target load that delivers solid consistency and pattern performance without the premium price tag. They're used successfully at ranges and competitions nationwide. If you're putting in high volume of shooting practice, the cost savings add up while performance stays reliable.
