Federal's redesigned Speed-Shok shells are built for serious waterfowl hunting. These 3-inch 12 gauge loads pack 1 1/4 ounces of #4 steel shot moving at 1450 fps, giving you the velocity needed to bring birds down cleanly. The steel pellets are uniformly round, which means tighter patterns and deeper penetration through feathers.
One of the biggest upgrades to these shells is how clean they burn. The fast-burning powder formula leaves drastically less residue in your barrel and action compared to older blue box loads, so you spend less time cleaning and more time hunting. The Catalyst high-performance lead-free primer ensures complete, consistent ignition even when temperatures drop and conditions get wet.
Speed-Shok ammunition prioritizes consistent, repeatable performance. The uniformly round shot pellets deliver compact shot density that holds patterns well at distance. Users appreciate the deep crimp design for excellent water sealing, and field reports show clean barrel conditions after shooting in cold temperatures. These shells are packaged in 25-round boxes, making them convenient to carry and use throughout your hunt.
#4 steel shot sits in the sweet spot for waterfowl hunting. It's effective on ducks and works well on early-season geese, offering a good balance of pattern density and penetration without the excess recoil of larger shot sizes.
#4 steel shot provides a good balance of pellet density and penetration for duck hunting and early-season geese. Larger sizes like #2 or #1 offer deeper penetration for bigger birds, while #4 keeps tighter patterns at typical waterfowl distances. Your choice depends on what you're hunting and how far you typically shoot.
The fast-burning propellant formula burns more completely, leaving less powder residue in your barrel and action. Field testing shows dramatically cleaner bores after shooting compared to older Federal loads. This means less barrel fouling during long days in the marsh and easier cleanup when you get home.
These 3-inch shells are compatible with shotguns chambered for 3-inch or 3.5-inch shells. Never fire them in shotguns rated for 2.75-inch shells only, as this can damage the gun. Always check your shotgun's chamber marking before purchasing ammunition.
Yes, the Catalyst lead-free primer is designed to provide reliable ignition in cold, wet conditions. Users have reported good performance shooting these shells in low temperatures with minimal ignition issues. The excellent water seal on the crimp also helps protect the powder in damp conditions.
