Federal's Black Cloud FS has been a go-to for waterfowl hunters since 2007, and the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad makes it even more dependable. This engineering breakthrough was born from field feedback: previous versions struggled with consistency through ported chokes because the wad's rear fins would deploy unevenly when muzzle pressure dropped. Federal solved that by extending the fins and adding support gussets to keep them deployed reliably, while side vents replace the old air-catching flaps to get cleaner wad and shot separation.
That rear-deploying wad design means the payload stays grouped longer before release, tightening your pattern right when you need it. The timing is critical with waterfowl, and this load achieves it whether you're using a standard choke or a ported one. A full pattern settles within 20 to 30 yards, making it reliable for typical duck and goose work over decoys, while maintaining pattern integrity out to longer ranges.
The shell packs 40 percent FliteStopper steel and 60 percent standard premium steel. The FliteStopper pellets are elliptically shaped with a thin cutting ring around the circumference, designed to create larger wound channels than traditional round shot. This blend keeps your pellet count up while maximizing lethality without the premium price tag of tungsten loads. The 1-1/4 ounce payload moves at 1450 fps, a velocity that works hard out to realistic hunting ranges.
Cleanup matters when you're putting dozens of rounds downrange during the season. Federal switched to a Catalyst lead-free primer and temperature-stable powder that genuinely reduces barrel fouling compared to earlier Black Cloud versions. You'll notice less carbon buildup, which means your shotgun cycles cleaner and stays more reliable through a full day of hunting.
Yes. The FLITECONTROL FLEX wad was specifically designed to work consistently with both ported and standard waterfowl chokes, which is one of the major improvements over earlier Black Cloud versions. The extended rear fins and side vents maintain reliable separation whether your barrels are ported or plain.
The #4 is an excellent all-around choice for ducks and smaller geese at typical waterfowl ranges. Larger shot like #2 or BB holds energy farther but with fewer pellets, while #4 keeps more pellets in the pattern with enough punch out to practical hunting distances. It's the versatile middle ground that works well with most waterfowl choke combinations.
FliteStopper pellets are elliptical with a thin cutting ring around them, designed to create larger wound channels than perfectly round pellets. The 40 percent FliteStopper mix in these shells increases terminal performance while keeping your pellet count high. It's Federal's way of improving lethality without switching to expensive tungsten shot.
The Catalyst primer and temperature-stable powder burn cleaner and leave less residue in the barrel than earlier Black Cloud formulas and some competitor loads. If you're running a semiauto shotgun, cleaner burning means better and more consistent cycling throughout the day.
