Description

The 8.6 Blackout is one of the more interesting cartridges to come along in a while, and this Faxon Match Series Big Gunner barrel is built specifically to get the most out of it. It takes a standard .308 bolt face and heavy .338-caliber projectiles, then spins them with an aggressive 1:3 twist that stabilizes those heavy-for-caliber subsonic bullets and drives serious energy on target. That extreme spin is the whole point of the round, and it is what separates it from lighter subsonic cartridges like 300 Blackout. Faxon was first to commercially button-rifle a 1:3 twist in this caliber, so they know the round about as well as anyone.

What Sets the Match Series Big Gunner Apart

This is the premium build in Faxon's 8.6 lineup. It starts with 416-R stainless steel, gets 5R button rifling, and then the bore is honed and lapped for a smoother finish that helps with consistency and cleanup. The barrel extension is treated with NP3 (Nickel Teflon) for a slicker interface, and the exterior wears a bead blast finish. If you want a barrel geared toward accuracy rather than pure hard-use volume, this is the one to reach for.

Fitting the Big Gunner 8.6 Blackout to Your Build

This is a carbine-length gas barrel with a .875" gas block journal, so plan your gas block and handguard accordingly. The muzzle is threaded M18x1.5 with a tapered shoulder, which is the standard interface for 8.6 mounting solutions and suppressors. It drops into DPMS Gen 1 / LR-308 pattern uppers and finishes with an 11-degree target crown to protect accuracy at the muzzle.

Where the 8.6 really earns its keep is suppressed and in the field. Subsonic loads run quiet and hit with authority on hogs and deer inside practical ranges, while lighter supersonic loads stretch things out a bit further. One note worth passing along: because of that fast twist, stick with bullets built for it. Verify headspace with proper gauges and confirm your muzzle device is aligned before you send rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this Big Gunner barrel drop into my existing AR-10?

Yes, it is machined for DPMS Gen 1 / LR-308 pattern AR-10 uppers and uses a standard .308 bolt face, so an 8.6 Blackout build is largely a barrel swap. You'll want a bolt that matches, plus a gas block sized for the .875" journal and a handguard that clears the carbine-length gas setup. As always, verify headspace with proper gauges before firing.

What's the difference between the Match Series and Duty Series 8.6 barrels?

This Match Series Big Gunner is built from 416-R stainless with 5R rifling and a honed and lapped bore for an accuracy edge, plus an NP3 barrel extension. The Duty Series uses 4150 CMV steel with a salt bath nitride finish, which leans toward high round counts and hard use. Both share the 1:3 twist and Big Gunner profile, so the choice comes down to whether you prioritize refined accuracy or rugged durability.

Why does 8.6 Blackout use such a fast 1:3 twist?

The 1:3 twist is the defining feature of the cartridge. It spins heavy .338 subsonic bullets fast enough to stabilize them and load them with rotational energy, which produces dramatic terminal performance that lighter subsonic rounds can't match. That same fast twist means you should use bullets specifically built for 8.6 Blackout, since standard cup-and-core projectiles may not hold together at those RPM.

Is this barrel a good choice for a suppressed hunting setup?

It's a strong fit. The 8.6 Blackout was designed around suppressed use, and subsonic loads run quiet while still hitting hard on hogs and deer at practical ranges. The M18x1.5 muzzle threads with a tapered shoulder handle the common 8.6 mounting solutions, just confirm your muzzle device is properly aligned before use.
