Faxon developed these barrels alongside Q, the outfit that created the cartridge, so the geometry and chambering are dialed in from the source. At 16 inches with carbine-length gas, it runs both subsonic and supersonic .338 loads and gives you a legit rifle-length setup that plays nice with a can.
The headline here is that aggressive 1:3 twist rate. Spinning a heavy .338 bullet that fast is the whole point of the cartridge, generating the fragmentation and energy transfer that make subsonic 8.6 hit way above its weight class on hogs, deer, and predators inside 150 yards or so. The bore is button rifled and capped with an 11-degree target crown for consistent accuracy, and the M18x1.5 muzzle threads (with a tapered shoulder) accept standard .338 muzzle devices and suppressor mounts.
Faxon machines every Big Gunner from raw 4150 CMV bar stock, a chrome-moly-vanadium steel that takes heat and high round counts in stride. The salt bath nitride finish coats the barrel inside and out, cutting down on fouling and standing up to the elements. Each one is fully stress-relieved, air-gauge tested, and magnetic particle inspected during the build, then checked for headspace on custom hardened gauges. The cartridge burns most of its powder in the first several inches, so shorter barrels are popular for suppressed builds, but a 16" gives you a full rifle-length setup with carbine gas that runs both subsonic and supersonic loads.
