The Faxon Duty Series Big Gunner takes everything folks love about Faxon's 5.56 Gunner barrels and scales it up for the large-frame world. This is a 16-inch .308 Win / 7.62 NATO barrel with a 1:10 twist, built for people who want a do-it-all AR-10 carbine that stays quick on target without turning into a boat anchor up front. The Big Gunner profile runs a medium taper behind the gas block for stiffness where it counts, then thins out forward to shed weight and keep the balance point where you want it. The whole barrel tips the scale right around two pounds, which is impressive for a full-power .308.
That forward taper isn't just about saving ounces. Keeping the mass rearward means faster transitions and less muzzle dip during strings of fire, while the geometry still holds up to sustained shooting and heat cycles. Pair that with the mid-length gas system and you get a noticeably smoother recoil impulse than a carbine-length setup would give you on a 16-inch .308, which makes follow-up shots easier to manage. The 1:10 twist is a sweet spot for modern .308 match loads and stabilizes heavier projectiles nicely.
Faxon machines these from 4150 CMV steel with traditional button rifling, then runs a QPQ salt bath nitride treatment inside and out for corrosion resistance and a hard, slick wearing surface. Every barrel is stress relieved, air-gauge tested, MPI inspected, and finished with an 11-degree target crown for a clean, repeatable bullet exit. They're chambered to SAAMI .308 spec and checked for headspace with custom hardened gauges. All of it happens in-house at Faxon's Cincinnati, Ohio facility.
This barrel uses the DPMS / LR-308 pattern, so it drops into standard large-frame uppers built to that spec. The gas block journal is .750 inches and runs 1.9 inches long, giving you room for standard low-profile blocks, longer blocks, or piston kits. Muzzle threads are 5/8×24, the common interface for .30-caliber muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. As with any barrel swap, verify your bolt, gas parts, and headspace before the first range trip, and Faxon's own BCG is a safe bet for matched fitment.
It's built to the DPMS / LR-308 pattern, so it fits large-frame uppers made to that spec. Since AR-10 platforms aren't fully standardized across every brand, confirm your receiver, bolt, and gas components match before installing. As with any barrel swap, headspace should be verified before shooting.
The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard interface for .30-caliber muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. That covers most common brakes, flash hiders, and suppressor adapters rated for .308. Always confirm your suppressor's caliber rating and check alignment during installation.
The 1:10 twist is a proven all-around rate for .308 Winchester. It stabilizes typical 150 to 175 grain match and hunting loads well and handles heavier projectiles without trouble. That makes the Big Gunner a flexible pick whether you're running factory ammo or dialing in a match load.
On a 16-inch .308, a mid-length gas system balances dwell time and recoil impulse better than a carbine-length setup. The result is smoother cycling and a softer, more controllable shot, which helps with quick follow-ups. It's a big part of why this barrel handles like a do-it-all carbine.
