There is a lot to like about a 20 gauge autoloader that runs light target loads and 3-inch magnums through the same magazine without complaint. That is exactly what the Escort PS brings to the table. Its SMART Valve Piston is a self-regulating gas system that handles everything from 7/8 ounce loads up to 2 ounce magnums, so you can go from dove field practice to late-season waterfowl loads without touching a thing. Add the FAST Loading System, which lets you feed the magazine with one hand and also works as your carrier latch and bolt release, and you get a gun that stays shouldered and ready while you top off.
The 28-inch chrome-plated barrel wears a checkered, ventilated anti-glare rib with a bead front sight, and it is proof tested and rated for steel shot, so ducks and geese are fair game with the right choke. Speaking of chokes, five come in the box: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. That covers turkey to quail and just about everything in between. The tube magazine holds 4+1, and a migratory plug is included to bring it down to 2+1 for waterfowl work. Full-coverage Realtree Timber camo keeps you hidden in flooded timber and hardwood bottoms where this pattern really shines.
At around 6.2 pounds, this is an easy gun to carry all day, and the 20 gauge chambering keeps recoil pleasant for smaller-framed hunters or anyone tired of getting beat up by a 12. The synthetic stock and forend have checkered grip surfaces for a sure hold in wet weather, and the included shims let you adjust drop and cast until the gun points where you look. A rubber butt pad soaks up recoil, spacers let you tweak length of pull, and sling studs come mounted from the factory. The aircraft alloy receiver even has an 11mm groove milled in, so adding a red dot or scope for turkey season is simple. For a do-it-all 20 gauge hunting gun, the PS checks a lot of boxes.
Yes, that is one of its strong points. The SMART Valve Piston is a self-regulating gas system rated to run everything from 7/8 ounce loads up to 2 ounce 3-inch magnums, and you can even mix light and heavy shells in the same magazine. Like most gas guns, give it a good cleaning and a couple boxes of shells to break in, and it settles right in.
You can. The chrome-plated barrel and included multi-choke system are rated for steel shot, and the gun ships with a migratory plug that drops capacity to 2+1 for duck and goose hunting. With the Realtree Timber camo, it is clearly built with waterfowlers in mind.
Yes. The aluminum alloy receiver has an 11mm dovetail groove machined into the top, which accepts 11mm rings and mounts for a red dot or low-power scope. That makes it a handy setup for turkey hunting or slug use. For wingshooting, the vent rib and brass bead work just fine on their own.
It is more adjustable than most guns in this class. Included shims let you change drop and cast so the gun mounts naturally to your face, and spacers behind the rubber butt pad let you lengthen the pull if you need more reach. That kind of fit tuning usually costs a lot more.
