The Escort Optima O/U leans into all of that with a 26 inch barrel set, a 2 3/4 inch chamber, and an aluminum receiver that keeps the whole package right around 5.5 pounds. Built by Hatsan in Turkey, it wears select Turkish walnut on the stock and forend, a black and silver engraved receiver, and a rubber recoil pad, so it looks the part of a classic double without the classic double price tag.
The standout here is Escort's Easy Adjust action system, which lets you dial in the force needed to open the action and lift spent shells. If you like a snappy, positive opening for fast reloads on the skeet field, set it firm. Prefer something gentler for a relaxed afternoon behind a bird dog, back it off. The gun runs a single selective trigger, a sliding tang safety, and an extractor system that raises hulls just enough to pluck them out by hand, which reloaders will appreciate since your empties never hit the dirt.
The barrels are proof tested and topped with a 7x7mm ventilated rib and a fiber optic front sight that picks up light nicely against brush or an overcast sky. Interchangeable choke tubes in the common BER/BEN Mobil thread pattern let you tighten up for wild flushing birds or open things up for close targets, and finding replacement or specialty tubes is easy given how widespread that pattern is.
This is a natural fit for grouse and quail country, dove fields, and casual skeet or sporting clays. It's also a smart pick for smaller framed or newer wing shooters who want a sub gauge double that's genuinely light in the hands. For anyone who has been eyeing a 28 gauge over/under but couldn't stomach what most of them cost, the Optima makes a strong case.
It's a user-adjustable setting that changes how much force is needed to break the action open and lift spent shells. You can set it firmer for quick, positive opening during fast paced clays shooting, or lighter for easy handling in the field. It's a feature normally missing from over/unders in this class.
This aluminum receiver 28 gauge model uses an extractor system, which lifts spent shells partway out of the chamber so you can remove them by hand. Only the steel receiver 12 gauge version of the Optima gets automatic ejectors. Plenty of upland hunters and reloaders prefer extractors anyway since your hulls stay with you instead of flying into the grass.
The Optima uses the BER/BEN Mobil choke pattern, one of the most common thread patterns out there. That means aftermarket tubes are widely available if you want to add constrictions beyond what ships with the gun. Escort also sells its own Optima tubes in Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder.
It's a great fit for it. At roughly 5.5 pounds with 26 inch barrels and a 42.9 inch overall length, it carries easily on long walks and comes up fast on flushing birds. The 2 3/4 inch chamber handles the full range of standard 28 gauge upland and target loads.
