Built by Hatsan, this 12 gauge break-action pairs a 28 inch barrel set with 3 inch chambers, so it handles everything from light target loads on the clays course to stout magnum shells when the birds are flying high. At around 7.2 pounds with a 45 inch overall length, it swings smoothly without feeling like a boat anchor at the end of a long walk through the field.
The barrels are 4140 chromoly steel with a chrome-plated bore that shrugs off moisture and fouling, and every set gets proof tested before it leaves the factory. Up top you get a 7x7mm ventilated, checkered rib that keeps your eye tracking naturally to the target. The single selective trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first, which is handy when you want different chokes ready for different ranges. Speaking of chokes, the Optima uses the widely available Beretta/Benelli Mobil thread pattern and ships with Full, Improved Modified, and Cylinder tubes that are rated for steel shot, so waterfowl loads are on the menu right out of the box.
Escort did not cheap out on the wood here. The stock and forend are select Turkish walnut that has been kiln-dried and moisture stabilized, finished in a practical matte that looks good without being fussy about scratches. A rubber recoil pad takes the sting out of heavier loads, and the engraved receiver gives it a touch of class you usually see on guns costing quite a bit more.
