There are plenty of 1873 reproductions out there, but the Great Western II Premier is the one Pietta builds when they want to show off. EMF has been partnered with Pietta on the GWII line since 2002, and the Premier sits at the top of that lineup. The frame gets traditional color casehardening done the old way, with bone and charcoal instead of chemical shortcuts, so every gun wears its own one-of-a-kind swirl of blues, browns, and straw colors. The barrel and cylinder are deeply blued, the screws, cylinder pin, and ejector knob are nitride blued for contrast, and the checkered walnut grips are fitted to the frame by hand. Before any of them ship, a member of the Pietta family personally inspects each revolver.
Underneath the fancy finish work is the same period-correct architecture that made the GWII line a favorite in cowboy action circles. That means a floating firing pin in the hammer rather than a transfer bar, so the lockwork feels and functions like an original Colt pattern gun. The steel frame is drop forged and CNC machined, the barrel is hammer forged, and the whole package balances the way a 4.75" single action should: quick out of the leather and steady on target.
The .357 Magnum cylinder is one of the most practical choices in the lineup. Load .38 Specials for cheap, soft-shooting range days and cowboy matches, then step up to full-house magnums when you want the extra thump for the trail or just for the fun of it.
