The receiver starts life as a solid billet of moly-chrome steel, gets machined on modern CNC equipment, then receives genuine bone-charcoal case hardening, the old-school way of doing it that produces those swirling blues and browns no two guns share. Cosmetic side plates carry hand-cut English scroll engraving over roughly a quarter of the metal, giving it the presence of guns costing considerably more. Underneath the pretty exterior sits a proven trigger plate mechanism, so the good looks are backed by a lockwork design trusted on serious doubles for generations.
The stock and beavertail fore-end are cut from Grade 2.5 Turkish walnut, hand-fitted, finished in oil, and checkered at a fine 24 lines per inch. A 20 gauge on a properly scaled frame carries light and comes up fast, and the 30 inch barrels add just enough weight out front to smooth your swing on crossing birds and long clays presentations. The vent rib wears an ivory front bead with a mid-bead, so establishing a consistent sight picture comes naturally. A manual safety and a checkered wood butt plate round out the traditional touches.
Five thin-walled choke tubes come standard, which means one gun can cover early season quail over pointing dogs, a Saturday of skeet, and pass shooting doves in a September sunflower field. It's the real deal. Dickinson uses true bone-charcoal case hardening on the receiver, the same traditional process used on classic doubles, which produces genuine color variation from gun to gun. Combined with the hand-cut English scroll on the side plates, no two Plantations look exactly alike.
The side plates are cosmetic. The actual lockwork is a trigger plate mechanism, which is a proven, reliable design used on quality doubles for a long time. The plates simply give the gun the elegant sidelock look and extra canvas for engraving.
For a lot of shooting, yes. The longer barrels add forward weight that smooths out your swing and helps with follow-through on clays and longer crossing shots. Since a 20 gauge frame is lighter than a 12 to begin with, the 30 inch tubes balance the gun nicely without making it feel like a chore to carry.
